There has been a significant market move in favour of Aston Villa ahead of their Championship play-off semi-final with West Brom.
bet365 initially made the fifth-place team narrow 4/5 (1.80) favourites to come out on top over the course of two legs against their local rivals. That price is long gone now though, with Villa just 8/13 (1.62) to come out on top.
“Albion may have finished above Villa, scored more goals than them and won at Villa Park just a few months ago, but the market is speaking very strongly in Dean Smith side’s favour after their fantastic end to the campaign,” said bet365's Steve Freeth.
Beaten in the play-off final at Wembley by Fulham last term, Villa bring some impressive end of season form into the post-season. The West Midlands club won 10 straight Championship games throughout March and April to secure their place in the top six.
Smith chose to rotate his squad for the clash against champions Norwich on the final day of the campaign, but the previous hot-streak appears fresh in the minds of punters.
Goals could be on the agenda when the rivals lock horns too. West Brom netted 87 times in the regular season with Villa five goals behind in the scoring stakes.
Those tallies mean they boasted two of the top three attacks in the second tier – only Norwich scored more over the course of 46 games. Three or more strikes in the first leg at Villa Park is Evens (2.0) with bet365.
The move has also had an impact on the outright promotion market with Villa cut to 15/8 (2.88) from 9/4 (3.25). They're now joint-favourites with Leeds United with West Brom out to 4/1 (5.0) and Derby County the outsiders at 9/2 (5.50) to reach the Premier League.
