East Bengal picked up a narrow victory against NBP Rainbow AC in their sixth match of the 2018 Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division ‘A’. The win takes the Red and Golds to the top of the table, overtaking arch-rivals Mohun Bagan on goal difference.
After a hat-trick of 3-0 wins, it was a hard-fought triumph over a resilient Rainbow side. It was a much-needed win too for East Bengal with the Kolkata derby a week away.
Even though a 1-0 win will not satisfy the fans, it has to be kept in mind that the pitch conditions were not the ideal for a football match.
The Kolkata giants needed a penalty kick to register three points against the minnows to take them back to the summit of the league table. The Red and Golds failed to replicate the performances of their last few matches where they played eye-pleasing football.
But the fans need not worry as it was a rare off day for Subhash Bhowmick’s men and the pitch condition played a part in it. After the match, star Mahmoud Al-Amna has said that it is not possible for a team to get convincing wins every day.
It has to be kept in mind that even on an off day, the team managed to get a positive result without conceding goals. On several occasions in the past, we have seen that the minnows knock points off favourites, taking advantage of poor grounds. It was a commendable effort from the East Bengal players to get the three points which is what ultimately matters.
The Kolkata giants play one more match on Wednesday before the big game. A convincing win against George Telegraph will remove all the negativity surrounding the team at the moment and give them the much-needed boost before their match against rivals Mohun Bagan on September 2.
