The Toffees continue their European odyssey as they gear up for their group opener against last season's Serie A upstarts

Everton are into the group stage of the Europa League and they begin with a clash Serie A side Atalanta at the Citta del Tricolore on Thursday night. 

Atalanta have not been in a European competion for 27 years and this is the first time they have come up against an English side. 

The Toffees, meanwhile, will be hoping to secure their first ever win in Italy to get life off to a good start in Group E.

After a failed deadline day transfer to Chelsea, Ross Barkley has since suffered a hamstring injury and is due to be out for a number of weeks.

Gylfi Sigurdsson Everton

Ronald Koeman

Everton haven't had the strongest start to the season, securing just four points in four games and losing their last Premier League match 3-0 against Tottenham

However, with top-scorer Wayne Rooney on hand having been part of the reigning Europa League champions squad with Manchester United, Ronald Koeman hopes the Toffees will be able to progress from Group E. 

Koeman's men came through two qualifying rounds against MFK Ruzomberok and Hajduk Split and will be aiming to maintain their form in the competition with a what would be a historic win in Italy.

Home side Atalanta are returning to Europe for the first time in 27 years after a successful previous season finishing in fourth place in Serie A and coach Gian Piero Gasperini will be hoping to use their 3-4-3 formation to secure a win.
