The Second City derby commences on Sunday as the Villans take on the Blues at Villa Park with both teams looking to gain bragging rights in Birmingham

Aston Villa take on their cross city rivals Birmingham City on Sunday in what is set to be one of the most competitive Second City derbies in years.

Despite Villa arguably having the stronger team on paper both sides sit on the same number of points in the league separated by only one goal.

Although it is the Claret and Blues who are ahead in the table, Birmingham will be happier with their season so far. Garry Monk's side have only lost three games during this campaign but an extraordinary number of draws have seen them struggle to make a push for the play-offs.

Latest odds

The bookies believe Aston Villa are more likely to get the job done at home as bet365 have made them favourites at an industry-best price of 17/20 (1.85). Birmingham are available at 3/1 (4.00) while backing a draw would return at odds of 13/5 (3.60).

Team news

Aston Villa will be coming into this game with a full squad to choose from as they currently have no injuries or suspensions to worry about.

Birmingham aren't as lucky, with their midfield looking light. David Davis remains a long term absentee whereas Gary Gardner will be unavailable for selection against his parent club. Star man Jota is a doubt after he came off against Hull City with and injury and Jacques Maghoma's participation is also in question.

Birmingham City's form this season has largely been down to two men, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Che Adams. The strike partnership have scored 17 of Birmingham's 23 goals this campaign so they will be relying on their form to continue if they are to pick up points against their biggest rivals.

Aston Villa have underperformed this season so far and Steve Bruce was sacked in October, with former Brentford manager Dean Smith brought in to replace him.

After a rocky start, Smith got his new side performing at a decent level with an impressive 3-0 win against Derby last time out.

Interestingly, Smith oversaw a 5-0 drubbing of Birmingham City at Griffin Park last year during his tenure at the Bees and that will certainly give Villa fans confidence heading into this one.

This game could be won due to Smith's knowledge of the Birmingham squad. Harlee Dean, Maxime Colin and Jota all played under the current Villa boss whilst at Brentford and Smith surely knows their strengths and weaknesses. If he can exploit that, he may enjoy his first ever Second City derby.

Tips and predictions

With Birmingham losing only three times this season, Draw No Bet on the away side could be appealing at 2/1 (3.00). However, with Smith's previous result against the Blues in mind there's better value elsewhere.

Lukas Jutkiewicz to score anytime looks over priced at 11/4 (3.75). The striker has netted eight goals in his last eight games so bet365's current price for him to score offers value which is too good to turn down.
