Shamrock Rovers 2-0 Cork City: Hoops progress to EA Sports Cup semi-final

A late goal in either half by Ronan Finn and Ciaran Kilduff helped Trevor Croly's side book a last four game with Dublin rivals Bohemians
Shamrock Rovers defeated Cork City in a heated affair at Tallaght Stadium where both players had a man sent off.

Ronan Finn capitalised on a rebounded strike to break the deadlock just before half-time, and Ciaran Kilduff finished in stoppage time in the second half to send the Hoops through to the semi-finals of the EA Sports Cup.

Things heated up at Tallaght Stadium on the half hour mark when Robert Bayly and John Kavanagh both challenged for a breaking 50-50 ball with their studs showing, and both players consequently received yellow cards.

Moments later another tough challenge in the middle of the park caused an aggressive frenzy between both sides, with Garry Buckley seeing red and Gary McCabe also taking an early shower, picking up a second yellow card.

Ronan Finn fired the Hoops into the lead on 42 minutes, following up on his initial shot which McNulty did well to push onto the crossbar. Simon Madden provided the cross from the byline and the Rovers' midfielder showed his composure in front of goal to secure the rebound.

The second half began much less fiery than the first, with both sides struggling to break down the opposition defence. The introduction of Kieran Marty Waters led to a wave of Rovers opportunities with Sean O'Connor failing to convert from close range, and Waters drawing a fine save from McNulty after cutting in from the left and driving a low shot at goal.

Substitute Danny Morrissey almost stole a late equaliser for Cork when he fired a low header at goal which Craig Hyland pushed onto the post. However moments later Kilduff rounded McNulty to tap into an empty net and complete the victory.

Shamrock Rovers will face Bohemians in the semi-final of the EA Sports Cup on August 4.
