Dundalk midfielder Robbie Benson crowned Player of the Month

The midfielder is the fourth player from Dundalk to win the award in 2016 after finishing ahead of Dylan Connolly and Raffaele Cretaro

Dundalk midfielder Robbie Benson has been named the SWAI/SSE Airtricity Player of the Month for August.

Benson played a part in each of the Lilywhites' six games in August, scoring in Champions League games against BATE Borisov and Legia Warsaw.

The 24-year-old is the fourth Dundalk player to win the award this season, following Ronan Finn, Daryl Horgan and David McMillan.

"It’s nice to win it. It’s good recognition not just for me but for the club too," Benson said.

"I think the European run captured the imagination of the country and that helped. It’s four different players in the squad now who have won this award this year.

"That goal [against Legia] is probably the highlight of my career so far. I was telling the lads in training before that I was hitting the ball sweetly and I felt I was going to score. I think they just laughed it off though!"

The midfielder, who joined Stephen Kenny's side from UCD ahead of the 2016 season, has made 17 league appearances, scoring two goals.

He finished ahead of Bray Wanderers forward Dylan Connolly and veteran Sligo Rovers attacker Raffaele Cretaro, who were second and third respectively.
