Newport will now look to bounce back from this defeat by aiming to maintain their unbeaten start to the league season against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday. Meanwhile, West Ham head into their Premier League clash against Norwich at the London Stadium following back-to-back wins during the past week.
West Ham seal victory over their League Two opponents with a goal either side of the interval from Wilshere and then Fornals. The visitors almost took an early lead when Fornals' effort bounced off the post, but Amond then went close to putting Newport in front but he couldn't convert from close range. Wilshere then put West Ham in front after he latched on to Howkins' error before slotting home on the verge of half-time, while Fornals added a second when he tapped home Anderson's cross on the 65th minute. Wilshere could have added another in the second half with a long-range effort and Sheehan also went close for Newport when he hit the bar late on, but it remained 2-0 to the Premier League side.

McNamara loops a ball for Abrahams to chase down the right channel and the striker nearly gets there, but Roberto comes off his line to beat him to it.
Haynes floats a free-kick delivery deep into the box which is met by the head of Howkins, but his effort towards the bottom right-hand corner is palmed wide by Roberto.
That long-range effort was Wilshere's last contribution in the match as he is replaced by Coventry in West Ham's second change.
CLOSE! Wilshere pick it up some 30 yards from goal and creates some space as he approaches the edge of the box, but his effort towards the bottom left-hand corner drifts inches wide.
Newport's final change sees Collins replace Willmott.
West Ham start to toy with the ball on the edge of the box as they aim for a third, but Zabaleta's pass inside is cut out by Amond who drills it clear and then urges his teammates forward.
Snodgrass receives the ball on the right-hand side of the box and he lays it inside to Zabaleta, but the full-back sees his effort softly deflected into the hands of Townsend.
West Ham have again seen plenty of the ball in the second half, and they are now comfortably stringing together a chain of passes as they assert their authority on proceedings.
West Ham fail to launch an attack as Anderson plays it into Ajeti who is dispossessed on the edge of the box. The visitors then aim to make a break as Sheehan lofts a ball through for Abrahams to chase, but it runs through to Roberto to claim in the West Ham area.
Haynes manages to squeeze a delivery into the box from the right after edging past Zabaleta, but he overhits his cross as it evades Amond and sails out for a goal-kick.
Abrahams wins a free-kick on the left wing after going to ground under the challenge of Diop, but the eventual delivery finds the head of Howkins who can only steer it well above the bar.
Fornals' strike means both of West Ham's goalscorers this evening have netted for the club for the very first time.
Anderson did well to create that goal with a late burst of pace to receive the ball on the overlap, with his pass eventually finding Fornals after Ajeti failed to get a touch on it.

Newport's first change of the match sees Bennett enter the fray in place of Dolan.
Fornals slides a pass through to the onrushing Cresswell down the left channel, but the ball is poked out for a corner by Willmott before he can deliver it into the box.
Wilshere collects the ball inside the Newport half and has time to weigh up his options before looping a pass into the path of Ajeti, but Townsend emerges from his goal to beat the striker to the loose ball.
Snodgrass' corner is curled towards Ajeti at the back post, but he nods his effort into the ground and wide of the left-hand post.
Sanchez sprays a long ball to Zabaleta as he runs down the right-hand side of the Newport box, but his first-time delivery across goal is intercepted and Newport concede a corner.
Anderson whips a corner deep into the box which nearly runs through to Fornals at the back post, but Dolan intervenes to thump the ball away from danger.
SO CLOSE! Newport very nearly pull level Willmott receives the ball on the right flank before fizzing a brilliant delivery across the face of goal, but Abrahams can't quite reach it at the far post and it runs out for a throw-in on the far side.
Sanchez drives forward into the box before laying the ball off to Zabaleta on the right-hand side. He cuts it back to Snodgrass who floats a first-time delivery into the box with the outside of his foot, but it's cleared away by Newport.
Haynes receives the ball just inside the West Ham and he looks to drift a delivery towards Abrahams in the box, but the striker can't jump high enough to reach it and it runs through for Roberto to claim.
Snodgrass cuts inside from the right and muscles off the challenge of Whitely to work the ball wide to Cresswell on the far side, but the full-back overhits the resulting delivery and it goes out for a goal-kick.
The referee blows his whistle and Ajeti passes it back to Wilshere to kick off the second period.

Newport have managed to work the ball into some dangerous positions during the first period, but Flynn will be hoping the hosts can improve on their 56% pass completion rate in the second period in order for his side to fully maximise their use of possession.
West Ham head into the break with the advantage after Wilshere's strike on the brink of half-time. The visitors almost went in front early on when Fornals fired his effort against the post, but Newport acquitted themselves well throughout the first half and could have scored themselves when Amond's close-range effort was kept out. Flynn's side looked set to deservedly head into the break with the scores level, but Wilshere was alert to capitalise on Howkins' error in the 43rd minute to put the Hammers in front with his first goal for the club.

Wilshere latches on to the loose ball and runs through on goal and before slotting it into the bottom right-hand corner.
Snodgrass drills a ball towards Ajeti on the right-hand side of the box, but the striker is dispossessed when his attempted backheel into the path of Snodgrass is intercepted by the Newport defence.
Willmott makes a break into a pocket of space down the right channel and his delivery falls to Dolan just outside the box, but his delivery deflects off Abrahams and is kept out by Roberto. The linesman's flag is then raised against the striker soon later.
McNamara swings in a delivery from the right-hand side which finds its way through to Amond, but he fails to bring it under control inside the box and it is cleared away.
West Ham have dominated possession so far by seeing nearly 72% of the ball, but Newport have put up a good battle so far and have won two more duels than their opponents.
Wilshere receives the ball from Snodgrass just outside the right-hand side of the box, but his curling effort does not test Townsend and drifts wide of the far post.
Newport win a free-kick some 25 yards from goal and Nolan looks to bend it into the top left-hand corner, but Roberto manages to comortably reach it.
Haynes wins a free-kick on the left flank after being nudged over by Snodgrass. The delivery falls to Amond at the back post and he is forced backwards, but Whitely then surges down the right wing before drilling a cross into the box which is unknowingly deflected wide by Diop.
Abrahams does extremely well to shield the ball inside the Newport half and he forces Balbuena into conceding a free-kick to ease pressure on the hosts.
Willmott floats in a corner from the right which is nodded into the path of O'Brien who is unmarked just inside the six-yard box, but he fails to reach it at full stretch and Roberto claims the ball.

Newport aim to launch a quick counter-attack as Amond rises above Balbuena to nod the ball through to Abrahams, but Diop intervenes to claim the ball and then win a free-kick on the edge of the West Ham box.

This is the first time Newport and West Ham have ever met in the League Cup, with the two sides’ last meeting taking place in January 1979 when the Hammers suffered a 2-1 FA Cup defeat.
Newport boss Michael Flynn has made just one change following their 1-0 victory over Crewe in League Two, with Nick Townsend replacing Tom King between the sticks. Captain Joss Labadie and Jamille Matt both remain sidelined with injuries.
West Ham have made a total of 10 changes from the side that beat Watford on the weekend, with defender Issa Diop the only player to retain his place. Pellegrini had a fully fit squad to choose from, and he has handed a debuts to striker Ajeti and goalkeeper Roberto.
