Commentary

That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Manchester United and Newcastle United! We hope you enjoyed it!
Manchester United face a tough test next Sunday, when they travel to London to face Chelsea in the Premier League. Newcastle are in action again on the 27th, when they host Wolves.
Manchester United’s quality was on full display as they eased past Newcastle with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford. Bruce’s side looked to be in a good position after 45 minutes with the match level, but they were not able to push on as the hosts piled the pressure onto Darlow’s goal before James made the Magpies pay with a well-taken strike. From there, the visitors were not able to get themselves back in the contest before a late Fernandes penalty won by Rashford wrapped up the result for Solskjaer. The win sends Manchester second, while Newcastle stay 17th.
90' + 3' FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 3-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED.
90' + 1' The fourth official indicates three minutes will be added for stoppages.
S. Shoretire
M. Rashford
89' Rashford is given a rest at the end of the match, with Shoretire sent on in his place.
Mata
D. James
88' James is replaced by Mata with two minutes remaining.
87' Manchester United are looking comfortable, knocking it about in midfield as they wait for time to expire. It’s been a solid performance from the hosts, though they haven’t needed to exert themselves too much.
85' Since his Premier League debut in February 2020, Fernandes (11) has himself scored more goals from the penalty spot than any other team in the competition (Chelsea, Leicester, 9).
83' MAGUIRE PUTS IT WIDE! After a quick succession of corners, the best chance falls to the Manchester United captain - who sends his close-range header just wide of the post!
81' James looks to put a cross to the far post for Rashford, but he slips as he delivers - sending the ball straight off a defender and out for a corner.
D. Gayle
M. Almirón
79' Almiron will play no further part in the match, as Gayle is brought on to replace him.
J. Murphy
A. Saint-Maximin
77' Searching for an equaliser, Newcastle make a change as Saint-Maximin is replaced by Murphy.
Bruno Fernandes
Penalty Goal
75' NO DOUBT ABOUT IT! Fernandes steps up to the spot and buries it in the corner - giving Darlow no chance. It’s six goals in his last six matches in all competitions for Fernandes, who has quickly become his side’s talisman.
74' PENALTY TO MANCHESTER UNITED! Rashford was able to latch onto the loose ball following Hayden’s clearance, before driving back into the penalty area and falling under the weight of a Willock challenge. The hosts have the chance to double their advantage!
72' Fernandes takes a Manchester United free-kick to the far post, where it’s temporarily cleared by Hayden.
M. Greenwood
A. Martial
70' Manchester United's first substitution of the match comes at striker, where Martial is replaced by Greenwood.
69' Saint-Maximin wins possession back for his side just ahead of his own penalty area, before a foul gives Newcastle a chance to clear their lines from a free-kick.
67' Fraser looks to trouble De Gea with his low, driven shot - but the keeper is unworried as he makes the necessary stop at the first time of asking. It’s Fraser’s first piece of involvement since coming on - though he’ll be hoping for better.
65' Martial cuts inside and hits a swerving shot towards goal, but Darlow is able to catch it cleanly.
63' Manchester United haven’t won three consecutive league games by a 3+ goal margin against a side since doing so versus Aston Villa between April 2013-March 2014.
61' Bruce’s side will have to dig themselves out of a hole again if they wish to take anything from the match and put any distance between themselves and Fulham; who sit three points back in 18th.
59' Martial bursts into the penalty area after holding off Hayden and hammers a high shot towards goal which Darlow does well to push over the crossbar.
Bruno Fernandes
Assist
57' Fernandes is the man credited with the assist - as it appears his outstretched leg was able to poke the ball towards James on the right side of the penalty area.
D. James
Goal
57' JAMES MAKES IT 2-1! Matic plays a square pass inside the penalty area, but it fails to find Fernandes centrally, instead carrying towards the far post. James finds himself in acres of space and has the time to take a touch before finishing with ease!
R. Fraser
Joelinton
55' Joelinton’s match is over after 55 minutes, as Fraser is the man chosen to replace him.
54' Rashford takes Krafth on and beats him the first time before the full-back is able to recover his position inside the penalty area and poke the ball away - winning his side a goal-kick.
52' The visitors have started the second half really positively, getting forward at every opportunity. Saint-Maximin has looked very lively on the left taking on defenders and opening up room for team-mates.
50' Saint-Maximin has enough room to fire a shot at De Gea from just outside the penalty area, but the low strike is collected well by the goalkeeper.
48' Saint-Maximin goes on a trademark slaloming run, beating James with a number of nifty touches before overplaying and losing control of the ball under pressure from Wan-Bissaka.
46' Newcastle get the match restarted from the kick-off!
Bruce will likely be forced into a change at half-time, with Joelinton really struggling to finish the first half. Gayle looks the likely replacement; a striker who can add real pace to the counter-attack. Manchester United will need to continue to find a way through the Magpies’ low defensive block, with the two-footed Greenwood a likely option should the Red Devils not manage to restore the lead quickly.
Manchester United and Newcastle head into the half-time interval deadlocked at 1-1 after an entertaining opening 45 minutes. The hosts started the match the brighter of the two sides, showing real intent to get forward and attack. Fernandes was central to every Manchester move, though it was Rashford who broke the tie with a fantastic solo goal of real quality. The lead was to hold for only six minutes though, as Newcastle - who looked far more comfortable on the counter-attack - found the equaliser through Saint-Maximin after a corner-kick wasn’t cleared by Maguire. The three points are still up for grabs in the second half, with both sides capable of snatching a win.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED.
45' The fourth official signals that two minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages.
43' A good piece of defending from Maguire and Shaw squeeze Almiron out of possession by the near touchline. He’s a threat when running at defenders, and will require constant attention from the Manchester United back line.
41' Fernandes takes a Manchester United corner to the edge of the six-yard box, but Willock is able to scramble it away and force the hosts to start again from the goalkeeper.
Joelinton
Yellow Card
39' Joelinton is shown a yellow card for a foul on Shaw during a poor attempt to win back possession high up the pitch.
Bruno Fernandes
Yellow Card
38' Fernandes is also booked for his part in the fray.
I. Hayden
Yellow Card
38' Fernandes and Hayden get into a bit of a shoving match in front of the referee, with the Newcastle midfielder deemed the instigator. It's a yellow card for Hayden - the first booking of the match.
A. Saint-Maximin
Goal
36' SAINT-MAXIMIN HAS THE EQUALISER! Newcastle take a corner-kick short to Willock, who launches it to the far post from the corner of the 18-yard box. Maguire gets a header to the ball, but his clearance falls right to the foot of Saint-Maximin, who lashes it into the roof of the net! 1-1!
34' Almiron takes a Newcastle corner short to Shelvey, whose follow-up effort is brought down by Saint-Maximin. The winger then earns himself a yard of space and fires a shot at De Gea - forcing the goalkeeper to push it over the bar.
32' Rashford's opener was his 40th goal in all competitions since the beginning of last season, with only Raheem Sterling (44), Harry Kane (45) and Mohamed Salah (47) managing more amongst all Premier League players.
H. Maguire
Assist
30' Maguire is credited with the assist as his pass found Rashford in space prior to the goal.
M. Rashford
Goal
30' RASHFORD GIVES MANCHESTER UNITED THE LEAD! It’s a beautiful solo goal from the Manchester United forward, who put the ball through the legs of Krafth, before opening up some space and beating the goalkeeper at his near post from an acute angle! 1-0 to the hosts!
29' Wan-Bissaka cuts inside after an interchange with James and fires a low, left-footed drive. It’s a good hit, though never likely to trouble the goalkeeper.
27' Manchester United have won four of their last five Premier League games against Newcastle (L1), winning the last two by a 4-1 scoreline.
25' Play is stopped for Joelinton, who has taken a seat on the turf while waiting for the medical staff to enter the field of play. He’ll need to go off for some treatment while Bruce ponders his options.
23' A lovely switch of play from Matic finds an open James on the right, but, after cutting inside, the winger’s strike is blocked at the edge of the 18-yard box by two Newcastle defenders.
21' Manchester United waste possession in a good area after Martial’s pass to Rashford on the left from the edge of the penalty area is misdirected.
19' Saint-Maximin gets into a good position to deliver a cross, but his effort is put far too close to Dea Gea.
18' Lascelles plays it long after a sustained period of Newcastle possession, but Maguire comes across to win the aerial duel and regain possession.
16' Lascelles hammers the free-kick across the pitch in search of Saint-Maximin, who brings it down well before bringing others on the left into play.
14' Krafth is down on the pitch in midfield after colliding with Shaw, who is receiving a stern word from the referee. A card won’t be produced, though it may be his last warning.
12' Fernandes scoops a lovely delivery to the far post looking for the run of Matic, but a proactive Darlow is able to claim it first.
11' Lascelles steps across Fernandes and brings him down - giving the hosts a free-kick outside the penalty area on the right. It looks a bit too far out to hit on-target, with a cross more likely.
11' Newcastle are gifted a chance to strike at goal after De Gea’s failed clearance presents possession to Joelinton. The forward sets the ball up for Shelvey, who skews his shot high and wide.
9' Almiron has stayed down holding his leg following a challenge from Maguire in midfield, but it appears as though the Newcastle forward will be okay to continue - much to Steve Bruce’s relief.
7' Manchester United are looking to move the ball quickly inside Newcastle’s half, but the visitors are doing a good job of closing down. There’s a real lack of space just ahead of Darlow’s 18-yard box; a problem Fernandes will be tasked with solving.
5' DE GEA PALMS IT OVER! Joelinton’s volley on the turn is punched over the crossbar by De Gea following Newcastle’s short-corner routine.
3' Rashford slips past Krafth expertly with a burst of pace, but the full-back manages to outmuscle the forward - allowing the ball to roll out for a goal-kick.
1' Manchester United get the match under way from the kick-off!
Newcastle make a single change from their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Monday, as Joelinton gets the start at striker ahead of Gayle.
Manchester United make two changes from their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion last Sunday. Scott McTominay is replaced in midfield by Matic, while Edinson Cavani, who is not available for this fixture, is replaced by James which allows Martial to play as a striker.
NEWCASTLE SUBS: Jeff Hendrick, Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll, Jacob Murphy, Martin Dubravka, Paul Dummett, Ryan Fraser, Sean Longstaff, Matt Ritchie.
NEWCASTLE UNITED XI (4-3-1-2): Karl Darlow; Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Jamal Lewis; Joe Willock, Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey; Miguel Almiron; Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin.
MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Mason Greenwood, Axel Tuanzebe, Eric Bailly, Dean Henderson, Alex Telles, Brandon Williams, Shola Shoretire, Juan Mata, Amad Diallo Traore.
MANCHESTER UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): David De Gea; Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka; Nemanja Matic, Fred; Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Daniel James; Anthony Martial.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, let's take a look at how the two sides will be lining up - starting with our hosts!
Just three points ahead of the drop, Newcastle have alternated wins and losses in their last four matches - considerable improvement compared to their run of five consecutive defeats in the month of January. It’s been eight years since the Magpies managed to collect all three points at Old Trafford; a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from the recently retired Yohan Cabaye.
Manchester United have been held to a draw in both of their Premier League fixtures following their 9-0 thrashing of Southampton 19 days ago. The Red Devils will need a victory today if they wish to finish the weekend in second place, after Leicester City’s win against Aston Villa earlier today. With cross-town rivals Manchester City 13 points ahead of United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side cannot afford to lose any more ground in their chase.
