Maritzburg United’s hopes of PSL survival were boosted with a 3-2 KZN derby win over Golden Arrows while SuperSport United ended their horror run of 10 league matches without a win by edging out TTM 1-0.

Maritzburg United 3-2 Golden Arrows

In a see-saw battle at the Harry Gwala Stadium, Maritzburg United took a significant step towards avoiding the relegation play-offs when they beat high-flying KZN rivals Golden Arrows 3-2.

The hosts had started the game well and took the lead in the 14th minute through Tebogo Tlolane’s crisp volley, after the visitors had failed to clear a long throw from Ryan Rae.

After an entertaining first half during which time Maritzburg could have scored more, the hosts had their second goal in the 56th minute when Fares Hachi found Bongokuhle Hlongwane, who in turn put Thabiso Kutumela in on goal, the latter scoring with a clinical angled effort.

From the restart though Arrows were to pull a goal back when Michael Gumede slid a low cross from Nduduzo Sibiya into the net.

More drama followed as Hlongwane scored in the 62nd minute, following a Kutumela assist, before Arrows again gave themselves hope through Nduduzo Sibiya’s 83rd minute penalty.

The hosts though were able to see out the win to move to 12th spot, three points above the play-off zone.

Bloemfontein Celtic 0-0 Cape Town City

With Citizens' interim coach Diogo Peral replacing the suspended Jan Olde Riekerink, City ended a two-match losing streak with a goalless stalemate against Celtic at the Dr Molemela Stadium.

The Cape side suffered a setback after 16 minutes when an injury to Abbubaker Mobara meant he had to be replaced by Keanu Cupido.

It was Celtic who came closest to scoring when Ndumiso Mabena’s shot on 30 minutes was cleared off the line by Terrence Mashego.

City made a late charge for victory and almost earned themselves an 86th minute penalty when Mokone Mereko brought down Craig Martin.

Instead, a free-kick was awarded on the edge of the area which Aubrey Ngoma fired over the bar, while Mereko was booked – his second yellow of the match - and was subsequently sent off.

Chippa United 0-0 Black Leopards

There was no separating relegation candidates Chippa United and rock-bottom Black Leopards as they drew 0-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

In a tight match, the Chilli Boys, losing Nedbank Cup finalists last weekend, had the better of the chances and Lidoda Duvha keeper Jonas Mendes was the busier of the two stoppers.

The hosts came closest to scoring when Kurt Lentjies hit the post in the second half and had to thus settle for the draw.

The result leaves Leopards rooted to the bottom of the table with 19 points, six points behind 15th placed TTM on 25 points. Chippa are 14th, above TTM on goal difference.

SuperSport United 1-0 TTM

SuperSport United secured their first league win in 11 matches with a slender 1-0 victory over TTM at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

In a lively first half, SuperSport had the better of the chances but found on-form TTM keeper Washington Arubi an impassable barrier, with Bradley Grobler in particular being denied on several occasions.

Grobler was, however, finally able to get the better of Arubi when he netted with a header following a cross by Guily Manziba in the 52nd minute, the PSL top scorer making it 14 for the season in the league.

That proved to be enough for victory as Matsatsantsa moved to 41 points, two behind third-placed Golden Arrows, who are above Orlando Pirates on goal difference.
