It has really been a tale of two halves for Bengaluru FC in the sixteen rounds of the ISL this season. In the first eight, the Blues were an all-conquering side with seven wins and a draw, as it looked like they could very well go and surpass the points tally they managed in the league last season.
However, only two wins in the last eight games sees them remain on 31 points, equal with FC Goa. Rotation to keep key players fresh for the playoffs has taken away some of their momentum as they suffered consecutive defeats on the road, first to bottom-placed Chennaiyin and then to a resurgent Delhi Dynamos.
In their final home game of the league phase, the Blues will be without defender Albert Serran who serves a suspension. Luisma is set to come in, which means an Indian midfielder might have to make way, possibly Udanta Singh. Sunil Chhetri, who came off the bench to score in Delhi, is expected to start in front of the home crowd on Thursday.
Goa, not known for their defensive organisation, have now managed to keep five clean sheets in a row and look to gathering momentum at the right time. Sergio Lobera has rallied his troops well and that translates on the league table as they sit top, pipping Bengaluru on goal difference.
Hugo Boumous had a good game against Kerala Blasters in the weekend and could get a look in against Bengaluru. But it remains to be seen if young goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz does make a comeback to the XI after recovering from injury.
While the enigmatic Ferran Corominas, runaway leader for the Golden Boot with 14 goals, has led the lines with aplomb, performances of Ahmed Jahouh in midfield and Jackichand Singh on the right wing has not gone unnoticed.
The Gaurs will be looking to avenge their home defeat to Bengaluru earlier this season.
With top spot on offer, will we see a tight clash or will the teams take it easy in the knowledge that a play-off spot is aleady sealed?
