Derry City 0-1 Sligo Rovers: Debut goal from Anthony Elding gives champions winning start

Ian Baraclough's side began their title defence with a decent display against a strong Derry City team at the Brandywell

Last season's champions started the season with a win, as debutant Anthony Elding scored the only goal of a tight game at the Brandywell. David Cawley hit the bar in the second half as Derry City drove players forward late on.

Before kick-off, Derry City were hit with the news that Stewart Greacen's knee injury would keep him out for the first few months of the season.

The Candystripes' experienced defender was sorely missed in their first game as Sligo took control of the match from the outset.

A series of corners amounted to little for Ian Baraclough's side, but the visitors drew first blood on 31 minutes when Anthony Elding scored after build-up play from David Cawley and Raffaele Cretaro.

Ten minutes into the second half, Sligo had a great chance to extend their lead, but Gavin Peers' header was off target after a corner from Ross Gaynor.

Thomas Crawley had a poor debut for Derry and was replaced by Michael Rafter, who livened up things for the hosts. However, his claims for a penalty were ignored by referee Neil Doyle after he went down easily under pressure.

Towards the end Derry pushed plenty of players forward to snatch a point, but could not break down the Sligo back four, while Sligo were unlucky not to add another when Cawley hit the bar.

Sligo begin the season with a win over their rivals, and will be hoping to get off to as strong a start as they did last year.
