Senegal World Cup
The Super Eagles will have their work cut out as they come up against their star-studded West African rivals in Ismailia on Sunday

  • Kalidou Koulibaly Senegal 2018

    #5 Kalidou Koulibaly

Arguably the most in-demand centre-back at the moment, with continuous links to Manchester United, Koulibaly will be a massive defensive threat to Nigeria. After another fine season where his club side Napoli finished second in Serie A and reached the Europa League semi-finals, the 27-year old defender will be making another statement of intent towards helping his country to continental glory in Egypt after being denied back in 2002.

  • Idrissa Gana Gueye

    #4 Idrissa Gueye

The energetic midfielder had a superb season with Everton in the Premier League which won him the Toffees’ Player’s Player of the Season award. He made the second most tackles and had the sixth highest number of interceptions and has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park to the bigger English and European clubs. Coming into this clash, it is not that Nigeria is short of quality, but it will take extra effort to get past the solid Gueye.

  • Mbaye Niang Senegal World Cup

    #3 Mbaye Niang

The 24-year old had a decent season with Rennes, banging in 14 goals in all competitions as Les Rouges et Noir won the French Cup, seeing off powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain via penalties in the final, and also reached the Europa League last eight, losing via away goals to Arsenal. Initially, on loan from Torino, Rennes have exercised the option to sign Niang on a permanent deal. With four international goals in the space of one year, the former Milan forward’s career trajectory is a big positive for coach Aliou Cisse.

  • Ismaila Sarr of Senegal during the international friendly match match between Senegal and Bosnia Herzegovina on March 27, 2018 in Le Havre, France

    #2 Ismaila Sarr

Another Senegalese that was vital for Rennes last term, having a hand in 24 goals (13 goals, 11 assists) in 50 competitive matches. The 21-year old bursts with a lot of pace, he has good passing skills and likes to get at defenders. If the Super Eagles backline can show their strength as a unit, they’ll need to handle the lively Sarr very well, otherwise, it will be a tough day in the office.

  • Sadio Mane of Senegal celebrates with teammate Youssouf Sabaly World Cup 2018

    #1 Sadio Mane

Talisman, team captain and one of Africa’s best. Senegal’s hopes of winning the Africa Cup of Nations will hinge on Mane, who goes to Egypt on the back of finishing as joint Premier League top scorer alongside fellow Africans Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah. He also joined the illustrious list of Africans to lift the Champions League after Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid. Without mincing words, Mane will be the biggest threat on the pitch and Nigeria will need to be beyond brave to stop him.
