Goal takes a look at the best moments involving the KPL arch-rivals Ingwe and K'Ogalo from recent history

  • AFC Leopards fans v Gor Mahia.

    The two-year lull

The fans were denied a chance to watch the derby between 2006 and 2008 because AFC Leopards were relegated to the second tier. Ingwe returned to the KPL and their first encounter back against Gor Mahia was on February 8, 2008.

Their welcome from the arch-rivals was not the desired one as they fell to K'Ogalo with a 3-2 scoreline. Zablon Otieno, Habil Otieno, and an own goal from Allan Ogal, a former Gor Mahia defender, gave the current champions their goals.

Francis Xavier scored a brace for Ingwe.

  • Gor Mahia FC fans v RS Berkane.

    The 2011 season's balanced fight

The 2011 season saw the two rivals both record a win each as Gor Mahia got a 3-1 victory in the first encounter before going down in the reverse fixture. Wycliffe Ochomo, Diomande Selenga and Dan Makori scored for the Green army while Mike Baraza scored for Leopards.

In the return match, AFC Leopards shocked Gor Mahia to a 2-0 loss as Baraza and Okwemba were the heroes for the 13-time KPL champions.

  • Sserunkuma emerged Kenyan Premier League Golden Boot winner with 16 goals

September 22, 2012: Sserunkuma's steals show with brace

In September 2012, Ugandan striker Danny Sserunkuma endeared himself to Gor Mahia fans when he struck twice to enable the club to pick up a 2-1 win. Sserunkuma scored in the 13th minute and scored the second in the 35th minute.

AFC Leopards' second-half dominance saw them pick up a 57th-minute goal but it was not enough to deny Gor Mahia and especially the now in-form Sserunkuma a glorious moment.

  • Gor Mahia v Sofapaka

    August 25, 2013: Gor Mahia come-back

In a highly charged encounter on August 25, 2013, Gor Mahia fought to register a memorable 2-2 draw. AFC Leopards took the lead in the 34th minute courtesy of Noah Wafula's effort before Paul Were added the second one in the 51st minute.

Gor Mahia fought back and got their opener in the 61st minute through fan-favourite Sserunkuma before defender David Owno equalised five minutes before full-time.

  • AFC Leopards fans at Kasarani.

June 8, 2014: Leopards' big win

On June 8, AFC Leopards earned what remains their biggest win against Gor Mahia to date. Ingwe picked up an away 3-1 win with Jacob Keli's first-half strike coupled with two other goals in the second half from Charles Okwemba and Bernard Wanyama tilting the tie in favour of AFC Leopards.

That remains to be AFC Leopards' biggest win over Gor Mahia in the last decade.

  • Gor Mahia celebrates as Dan Sserunkuma scores second goal against KRA.

    July 27, 2014: Sserunkuma's second brace

Sserunkuma was to earn another brace against Gor Mahia's arch-rivals in the second meeting of the 2014 season.

The Ugandan international struck in the 43rd and 47th minutes but goals from Wafula, in the 31st minute, and Martin Imbalambala's 83rd minute, ruined Sserunkuma's day as the spoils were shared in a 2-2 draw.

  • Lamine Diallo of Kakamega Homeboyz

March 6, 2016: Last Ingwe victory

Lamine Diallo scored a vital goal for AFC Leopards in a 1-0 triumph on March 6 at Nyayo Stadium. The victory remains the last for AFC Leopards against Gor Mahia up to now.

The goal, which was scored in the 80th minute, helped derail Gor Mahia's surge to defend the title as they eventually lost out to Tusker.

AFC Leopards have gone on to lose eight times and have drawn twice against the current KPL champions.

  • Gor Mahia striker Nicholas Kipkirui celebrates against AFC Leopards.

May 19, 2019: Kipkirui introduces self

Nicholas Kipkirui became one of the scorers to have earned a brace for Gor Mahia against AFC Leopards when he helped secure a 3-1 win on May 19, 2019. The former Zoo FC striker got his first Mashemeji goal in the first half before earning a brace in the second half.

Jacques Tuyisenge scored what would be his last Mashemeji Derby goal before leaving for Petro Atletico of Angola while Vincent Oburu was Ingwe's scorer.

  • Gor Mahia striker Gnamien Yikpe vs AFC Leopards.

    November 10, 2019: Yikpe's show

Gor Mahia recorded what looked like a routine win over AFC Leopards with Gnamien Yikpe scoring twice in a 4-1 win at Kasarani. The Ivorian broke the hearts of AFC Leopards fans with a 56th-minute header before finding the back of the net again eight minutes later.

Those were Yikpe's first and probably last Mashemeji Derby goals as he left for Yanga SC in January. Tresor Ndikumana thunderously struck the sole goal for Ingwe before he, too, left for Rayon Sports of Rwanda.
