Wijnaldum breaks remarkable goal run with Liverpool opener at Wembley

Georginio Wijnaldum has finally broken a remarkable goal run, with the Liverpool midfielder recording his first Premier League effort away from home during a meeting with Tottenham.

The Dutch midfielder arrived in English football back in 2015.

Newcastle acquired his services from PSV and saw him record 11 top-flight efforts during a one-season stay at St James’ Park.

Four of those goals came during a memorable 6-2 victory over Norwich, while he also found the target against Manchester United and Tottenham.

Wijnaldum was, however, to draw a blank in all of his outings on the road for the Magpies.

That sequence continued after linking up with Liverpool in a £23 million ($30m) deal.

He hit the net six times during his debut campaign, while adding one effort to that tally last term.

All of those strikes came at Anfield, with the Netherlands international seeing his wait for an away goal drag on into 2018-19.

That duck has now been broken with a looping header against Tottenham at Wembley.

Wijnaldum opened the scoring against Spurs after seeing Michel Vorm fail to deal with a James Milner corner.

His fellow countryman recovered enough to dive across the face of his goal and claw at a header which drifted over Kieran Trippier, but the ball crossed the line before he could clear.

That effort also saw Tottenham maintain an unwanted defensive record in 2018-19.

Wijnaldum will be hoping that there are many more goals to come for him on a personal level, with his impressive start to the current campaign having kept summer signing Fabinho out of the Liverpool fold.
