The Kenyan captain missed Spurs' 3-0 defeat against Manchester City on Saturday and speaking afterwards coach Mauricio Pochettino admitted that he could as well miss the season opener against the promoted side.

“He (Wanyama) played against PSG and he suffered a small problem in his cartilage in his left knee. But sure, for next week, he will be available to train again."

When asked whether Wanyama will be available to start in the league opener, Pochettino replied, "We hope yes but we need to see how he develops and how he is next week when we come back to London.”

Against City, the loss of Wanyama in particular was clear for all to see with the Kenyan midfielder missed in the middle of the park. Moussa Dembele, Harry Winks and Eric Dier all struggled against Manchester City.

Spurs could easily have lost by six or seven, with Sergio Aguero hitting the post twice, and Gabriel Jesus missing an open goal. Both Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm made a number of important saves to keep the score respectable.
