Tabitha Chawinga wins Swedish award
Success in the Damallsvenskan saw the Malawi star beat FIFA Women's Player of the Year to the best forward accolade

Kvarnsveden hit-woman Tabitha Chawinga has been named Swedish Women Football best forward of 2017.

The forward managed to defeat competition from reigning Fifa Women's World Player of the Year Lieke Martens and Montpellier's Stinna Blackstenius to nick the award at the Swedish Football Awards Gala on Monday.

The Malawian netted 26 goals in 23 appearances in all competitions at the end of the 2016-17 season, but her individual brilliance failed to see her side escape relegation from the Damallsvenskan.

To claim the prize which eluded her in 2016, she scored 25 league goals - 10 goals more than her closest challenger. 12 of the goals were match openers, five braces and two hat-tricks.

The 21-year-old sharpshooter missed out on securing a double as she was pipped alongside Limhamn Bunkeflo’s Mia Persson by Hammarby’s Filippa Angeldahl to the Most Valuable Player award.

Celebrating the award, the forward expressed joy and credited her feat to her team's support.

“I just thank God for being with me all through the season. I dedicate the award to my teammates for the support they gave me," Chawinga told Goal .

"Honestly, they made me shine and made scoring easy for me. It is very difficult to emerge the top scorer from a team in such a poor position.

"Before the season started, I gave myself a target to score 25 goals and I just thank God for helping me attain it. I'm proud and fulfilled to achieve this with my team," she concluded.
