A brace from Willis Plaza fired Churchill Brothers into the Round of 16 as they beat Delhi Dynamos 2-1 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. Alfred Fernandes, head coach of Churchill Brothers, was ecstatic after his team's performance which took many by surprise.
"It is not an upset. Delhi Dynamos are a good team but we are also a legacy club of the I-League. The concept with which the All India Football Federation (AIFF) started the Super Cup is very good for Indian football. Both teams missed chances but we were more decisive in front of goal. So we came out as winners," reasoned Fernandes.
Churchill Brothers will be up against Mohun Bagan in the next round and Fernandes expressed confidence in his troops to down the Green and Maroon brigade.
"Except the first outing where we lost 5-0, the next time we faced Mohun Bagan it was a very close contest. The tie could have gone either way. We failed to bury our chances on that day and our strikers were also injured. But now since Plaza has arrived and is gelling well with the team we are confident. He scored two goals and carried the team forward. Scoring was a big problem for us but today Plaza scored the goals and hats off to him for that," stated Fernandes.
Willis Plaza, who had a disappointing stint with East Bengal, was cheerful after he guided his team to victory in some style.
"I am just happy to play football. I had suffered some injuries and my confidence was very low. Happy to get the goals and be back playing football," said Plaza.
The Trinidadian refused to acknowledge that this was his personal best moment in India and also clarified that facing Mohun Bagan in the next tie doesn't mean much to him.
"I had better moments previously in India. But I am just happy to do the job for the team. It does not matter right now whom I face next," signed off Plaza.
