Enugu Rangers’ Solomon Okpako has stated that the Flying Antelopes are hoping to start their campaign in the Caf Confederation Cup on a good note on Wednesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in the first leg preliminary round against Defence Force of Ethiopia.

Okpako who is in his second season with the Flying Antelopes was in the team that surprised all to win the 2018 Federation Cup title and he has revealed that his teammates have forgotten the euphoria of the win and are fully focused on the midweek tie with the Ethiopians with the aim of putting the game to bed after the first leg.

“It was still like a miracle to us that we won the Federation Cup despite all odds against us but we must forget about that and think about the task at hand which is to do well in the Caf Confederation Cup,” Okpako told Goal.

“We cannot continue to dwell on the Federation Cup title win because we have an important game at home to Defence Force of Ethiopia. We cannot underrate them and it is the reason we must start the competition on a good note and score as many goals as possible at home before the return leg. We don’t know them and so it will be difficult to know the strategy to adopt but we are confident.

“I have to apologize to my teammates for the role I played in our 1-0 loss to Lobi Stars when I was sent off in the second half when we were still 1-0 down. It was an unfortunate decision that I took but I know how to handle the situation next time.”

Okpako who played for Warri Wolves in the same competition promised to bring his experience to bear when they start their campaign in Africa’s second-tier club competition.

“I am not new to this competition and I hope to make a success of it this term with Enugu Rangers,” he added.

“Warri Wolves were very close to qualifying for the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup but we lost to the North Africans. We will try to be focused from the start to avoid any distraction to our aspirations.”
