Solinas: It would be 'fantastic' to coach Orlando Pirates

The Italian is one of the frontrunners for Pirates coaching job, and he admits that it would be a dream come true to get the opportunity to coach them

Former Free State Stars coach Giovanni Solinas says getting the opportunity to coach a team like Orlando Pirates would be ‘fantastic’.

“For me it’s a dream. It would be unbelievably fantastic,” Solinas told Sowetanlive.

However, he revealed that he hasn't been in contact with the Sea Robbers regarding the coaching position.

“At the moment, I have not had contact from Pirates, but Pirates is a big club; it’s one of the best clubs not only in South Africa but on the continent,” he said.

“So, everyone wants to coach Pirates. To coach Pirates is a privilege and honour,” Solinas said.

The Italian mentor is well aware that coaching a big team like Pirates comes with its pressures, but he's confident he can handle it if given the job.

He once managed Algerian giants ES Setif, who won the Caf Champions League three years ago.

“But pressure... we need to accept pressure in football. Do you think at Real Madrid you don’t have pressure? It’s normal; it is not a problem,” Solinas said.

“Setif is the same as Pirates in Algeria. They have the same colours - black and white. They are the Juventus of Algeria. And they also have a lot of fans- 20 000 or 25 000 in the stadium every game.

“They participate every season in the [Caf] Champions League. They have a lot of history. I had a lot of pressure there, but it was a good club with good players. Pressure is not a problem,” Solinas concluded.

He confirmed that he will remain in South Africa for the foreseeable future.
