Rwanda confirmed as Cecafa Women's Challenge Cup host

The week-long regional competition will be contested by a total 11 countries

The 2018 Cecafa Women' Senior Challenge Cup will be staged in Rwanda.

The Rwanda Football Federation, Ferwafa, has confirmed the hosting of the regional games scheduled to be staged from July19-27 in Kigali.

Rwanda had raised concerns of hosting the event that was initially scheduled to take place between May 12 and 22, after the hosts accused the organizers, Cecafa of failure to release the funds in time.

According to Rwandan FA spokesperson, Bonnie Mugabe, the hosts received funds from Cecafa setting the stage for the regional tournament.

“We have received the funds from Cecafa and, we have set the new dates for the competition. We are looking forward to welcoming the region to Kigali and enjoying a well-organized tournament. Everything will be in place just in time,” Mugabe was quoted by The New Times.

Cecafa secretariat has received $1,000,000 Fifa grant that will be used to host all regional championships this year including; U-17, Senior Women and Men’s competitions.

The week-long regional competition will be contested by a total 11 countries, including hosts Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Burundi, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan and South Sudan.

Tanzania will be hoping to successfully defend their throne through Kenya’s Harambee Starlets, Uganda and Ethiopia are expected to give them a run for their money.

Tanzania won the title after edging Kenya in the final while Ethiopia overcame hosts Uganda to take third place.
