For the first time ever the UEFA Super Cup is a cross-city derby and we are backing the two sides from Madrid to play out another low scoring game

Over the last decade the UEFA Super Cup has been dominated by Spanish clubs, with eight of the last nine winners plying their trade in La Liga.

This season will see the trend continue as Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid meet in Estonia to contest their first piece of silverware of the season.

Latest odds

Domestically, Real Madrid have struggled against Diego Simeone's men in recent years with just one win in their last ten La Liga meetings, although Los Blancos did knock Atleti out of the Champions League in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Real Madrid have never lost a European final or been knocked out of European competition by Los Rojiblancos and are priced at 6/4 (2.50) with bet365 to win in 90 minutes.

Atletico are offered at 2/1 (3.00) and the draw can be backed at 11/5 (3.20).

Team news

Luka Modric started Real Madrid's final friendly of the summer on Saturday on the bench and could start again here, whilst Keylor Navas should start in goal ahead of Thibaut Courtois.

Atletico also had a friendly on Saturday night which saw Simeone field practically full-strength side. Only Antoine Griezmann was missing from the starting eleven, but expect him to return on Wednesday.

Preview

These two sides know each other well and while the Madrid derby has developed into one of the biggest fixtures in European football, games between Real Madrid and Atletico are often far from thrilling spectacles.

There is a new man at the helm at the Bernabeu and the early signs are that Lopetegui's Real Madrid will look to combine possession with energetic high-pressing.

Atletico have perhaps the clearest identity of any of Europe's elite sides, and there will be no straying from Simeone's successful formula of ruthlessly organised defending and efficient counter-attacking.

Goals are generally at a premium when these two sides meet and their league encounters last season saw a 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu and a 0-0 stalemate at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Tips and predictions

Under 2.5 goals has paid out in eight of the last 11 Madrid derbies and is offered at 7/10 (1.70) which is a price that could be worthy of consideration.

For slightly higher odds, opposing both teams to score at 19/20 (1.95) could appeal, with this proving the correct selection in seven of the last 12 meetings.
