Former Ghana defender John Paintsil has rejected claims that he owes former national teammate Derek Boateng $20,000, with the case now set to be heard at a court in Accra.
According to Boateng, Paintsil borrowed the money to place a bet during Ghana’s campaign at the 2014 Fifa World Cup but has since refused to settle the debt.
“I have received summons from [an Accra High] court over the said issue and I have discussed the matter with my lawyer to take the necessary legal actions,” Paintsil told Kasapa FM.
“All I can say for now is that I don’t owe Derek [Boateng]. Let me emphasis that I don’t owe him a penny, but since the matter is now in court, I will talk less and leave it to the judiciary body to decide whether I owe him or not. We will meet in court to find out the truth,” he added.
According to Goal's sources, the case which is expected to be called in court next month, will be presided over by Justice Jennifer Akua Tagoe.
Paintsil, who boasts of 89 caps with Ghana, was part of the golden generation that qualified the Black Stars’ to their maiden appearance at the Fifa World in 2006.
