Mexicans Abroad: Jesus Corona injured as Porto falters, Govea sees red

It was another active week for Mexican players in Europe, though not as active as some would have liked.

The Mexican players at Porto have become accustomed to a certain level of success, so a 3-2 home defeat to Vitoria Guimaraes came as a big surprise. Hector Herrera captained the team as usual, while Jesus Corona got into the match as a second-half substitute. He came on with Porto leading 2-0 before Vitoria's impressive comeback, but played just more than 20 minutes. Corona had to leave with a glute injury and is working out separately from the team at the beginning of the week.

It was an even shorter appearance this weekend for Omar Govea. The San Luis Potosi native made his Royal Antwerp debut but only played 16 minutes against Cercle Brugge, getting a straight red card for a tackle on Isaac Kone. Despite going a man down and missing a penalty in the first half, Antwerp went on to a 1-0 win. 

The other Mexican in Belgium, Standard Liege goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, played a bigger part in helping his team to victory. The 3-2 triumph over Sint-Truiden did, however, snap a three-match clean-sheet streak for the 33-year-old.

The losing streak continued for West Ham, with the Irons falling 3-1 to Arsenal and dropping to the bottom of the Premier League. Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez was on the bench to start the day, though he came in and played the final half-hour of the match. Elsewhere in England, Raul Jimenez started and played the full 90 for Wolves in the newly promoted side's draw against reigning champion Manchester City. 

In Spain, Miguel Layun is still awaiting his first minutes as a Villarreal player. He didn't get into the Yellow Submarine's scoreless draw against former club Sevilla. Hector Moreno continues getting important time in La Liga, though. The center back was a standout in Real Sociedad's 2-2 draw with Leganes. 

Andres Guardado wore the captain's armband for Real Betis this weekend, but Quique Setien's side couldn't find the back of the net in a 0-0 draw against Alaves.

Hirving Lozano's big game this week comes Wednesday, when he'll look to double his Champions League goal tally against BATE Borisov. The Lightbulbs still played a league match this weekend, with Lozano assisting one of Luuk de Jong's two goals in a 2-1 win over Zwolle that keeps them atop the table.
