Josef Martinez has shattered the MLS record for most goals in a season, scoring his 28th of 2018 for Atlanta United against Orlando City.
The star forward entered the contest needing just a single tally to break a 23-year-old record that had been equaled but never bested.
The first goal of the contest did not fall to Martinez, as his team-mate Leandro Gonzalez Pirez gave Atlanta an early lead with a goal in the 21st minute.
Orlando City would equalizer later in the first half behind Scott Sutter, setting the stage for Martinez to make history.
Martinez broke into the Orlando City area after being played in by Julian Gressel in the 74th minute. The forward had a nice touch to take him past Jonathan Spector and flicked it past Lions goalkeeper Joe Bendik to not only re-establish his side's lead, but also put his name in the history books.
The goal proved the difference as the Five Stripes walked away 2-1 winners to build on their league-best record.
The Venezuela international had equaled Roy Lassiter, Chris Wondolowski and Bradley Wright-Phillips on 27 goals with his score the Columbus Crew in Atlanta's last game, a 3-1 win.
Lassiter set the initial mark in 1996, the league's initial season, while playing for the Tampa Bay Mutiny.
Wondolowski equaled the mark with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2012, as did Wright-Phillips with the New York Red Bulls in 2014.
Incredibly, Martinez has managed the feat in just 26 games, with Lassiter previously the best, having scored 27 in 30 games. Wondolowski and Wright-Phillips finished on 27 goals after playing in 32 games in their season.
Martinez's goal-scoring prowess since joining Atlanta United since moving from Serie A side Torino prior to the start of the 2017 season has been nothing short of prolific.
While an injury limited his debut season in MLS, Martinez still managed to bag 19 goals in 20 games for the then-expansion MLS side.
His 28 in 26 games so far this season, Martinez now has scored an incredible 47 goals in 46 games in the MLS regular season.
Martinez will get a chance to extend his record when Atlanta United next play on September 3 against D.C. United.
