Match Report: Yanga 1 - 1 Singida United

The Jangwani outfit will now turn their attention to the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup against Wolayta Dicha

Yanga’s title hopes this season were dented by a determined Singida United side in a 1-1 draw at the Benjamini Mkapa Nationa Stadium in a match where their Head Coach George Lwandamina did not show up.

The build-up to the game was surrounded by the news of Lwandamina reportedly being set to rejoin his former club Zesco United at the end of next month.

Lwandamina will be returning to Zesco for a second spell having left them to join the Jangwani Boys in 2016.

He led Zesco to the Premier League title in his debut season and also guided them to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in 2016.

In this evening's game against Singida United, Yanga under Assistant Coach, Shadrack Nsajigwa and Noel Mwandila headed into the game knowing that only a win will help them cut the lead at the top of the table to three points behind their arch rivals Simba.

However, Yanga went behind in less than two minutes after Papy Salita “Kambale” capitalized on a defensive misunderstanding between Hajji Mwinyi and Abdallah Shaibu “Ninja” to poke in from close range.

Singida United dominated the game especially at the middle of the park where Mudathir Yahaya and Kenny Ally saw a lot of balls compared to Yanga midfielders Papy Tshishimbi and Pius Buswita.

One minute before half time, Shaibu “Ninja” corrected his mistakes when he headed in a Ibrahim Ajib corner to make it 1-1 until the break.

The only concern of the match for Singida United was the injuries to their two players Ally Mustapha (keeper) and Shafiq Batambuzi (defender) who were replaced before half time by Peter Manyika Jr and Salum Chuku.

Yanga returned much stronger after the break, hunting for a winner only for their out of form striker, Obrey Chirwa to miss a couple of clear chances.

The results will be good news for their arch rivals Simba who will play host to Mbeya City on Thursday in another Premier league match.

The Jangwani outfit will now turn their attention to the second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup clash against Ethiopia’s Wolayat Dicha set to be played on April 18.
