The international football extravaganza continues to offer several thrills and spills as the tournament reaches its business end, and we look at two KFC Moments of the Day.
Most notably, on Thursday, the action certainly didn’t disappoint with Croatia masterminding a superb victory over one of the favourites, as they booked their place in the next round, leaving the South Americans in a rather precarious situation.
Luka Modric showed just why he is so highly regarded in the football world as he dictated the game from the start to finish in his trademark midfield position putting in arguably one of the most influential performances of his career.
The playmaker evidently continued from where he left off in their last match against Nigeria. After Argentina fell behind due to a calamitous mistake by their goalkeeper Willy Caballero, which was finished off spectacularly by Ante Rebic, it was the 32-year-old’s goal which came as the killer blow.
Modric showed incredible technical ability as he toyed with the Argentina defender before unleashing a memorable curling strike from outside the box which stunned the Lionel Messi led Argentina.
While another star in Ivan Rakitic would compile further misery on their opponents before the end of the game as he tapped home from close range, it was Modric who would be singled out as the enforcer as the captain rightfully earns a place in one of our KFC Moments of the Day.
Meanwhile, Denmark have kept their hopes of progression into the next round alive after drawing with Australia. Once again it was a midfield genius who caught the eye, this time in the mould of Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen.
It took the English-based star just seven minutes to show his class as he sliced a beautiful half-volley past a hapless Australian keeper, that sent the Scandinavian fans into rapture. Eriksen’s stunner though, would eventually be cancelled out as Australia levelled from the penalty spot. But despite the result the Danish star’s effort will certainly not be forgotten due to the precision, technique and opulence of the strike.
