Phillipp Mwene has joined German Bundesliga side Mainz from second division side Kaiserslautern on a free transfer.

Mwene, a Viennese with Kenyan roots, signed a three-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2021.

The 24 year-old full-back made 65 appearances for Kaiserslautern, scoring four goals and nine assists in the process since his arrival at the lower division club in July 2016.

"I see my transfer to Mainz as a great chance to prove myself on the next level. I am an offensively minded fullback, who always pushes actively forward. I want to start helping the team out with my quality as soon as possible," Mwene said.

Mainz Sporting Director Rouven Schroeder described Mwene as a ‘strong and versatile attacking full-back’ adding that the club would not resist the allure to bring him on board.

“We see his potential to make the next step with us and are pleased that he has opted for Mainz," Rouven told Xinhua Sports.

The defender has expressed his desire severally to feature for the Kenya national team, Harambee Stars but he’s yet to receive the maiden call.
