ISL 2018-19: ATK sign Cameroonian defender Andre Bikey

ATK have confirmed the signing of Andre Stephane Bikey-Amougou for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season.

The 33-year-old, who began his senior playing career with Espanyol B team after passing through the ranks of RCD Espanyol's youth side, offers the versality to be deployed as a defensively midfielder besides his ability to play as a centre-back.

Among the foreigners, with the presence of Brazilian Gerson Viera and English centre-back John Johnson at the Kolkatan side's defense, Bikey's inclusion would allow ATK head coach Steve Coppell to explore his options in the defensive quarter.

The Cameroonian is set to join overseas recruits Viera, Johnson, Kalu Uche, Manuel Lanzarote, Noussair El Maimouni and Everton Santos at the club.

Bikey had earned himself a permanent deal with English Premier League team Reading FC in 2007 after a loan spell from FC Lokomotiv Moscow. He eventually played fo r more English teams such a Burnley, Bristol City, Middlesbrough and Charlton Athletic besides Greek side Panetoikos.

The former FC Pune City man had first plied his trade on Indian soil when he had joined fellow ISL side NorthEast United in 2015 and played for Port Vale FC in the English region of Burslem, Stoke-on-Tent, before he turned up for Jamshedpur FC.

He represented the Cameroon national team in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on three accounts (2006, 2008, and 2010) and was included in the squad for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Commenting on the signing, ATK head coach Steve Coppell said, "André Bikey will add a lot of strength and versatility to the squad. I have worked with him before and his experience and passion for the game makes him a very valuable player."

On joining his new side, Andre Bikey commented, "I am looking forward to joining ATK and helping them achieve success in season 5 of the Indian Super League. I have much respect for head Coach Steve Coppell and that made it an easy decision for me to sign here. The passion for football in Kolkata is one of the best in India, I can’t wait to get started."

ATK are meanwhile set to travel to Spain for their pre-season on August 21 and will return to the City of Joy by September 15. In Spain, they will be using the facilities at the Pinatar Arena (San Pedro del Pinatar) in Murcia.
