It looked for a while that James Troisi was going to cross the derby divide and join Melbourne City - that was until an 11th hour intervention from Victory coach Kevin Muscat secured his signature for a third A-League season.

The 29-year-old has shone in two previous seasons for the Victory, but has yet to taste success, coming closest in the penalty shootout loss to Sydney in last year's Grand Final.

James Troisi - Melbourne Victory

At his devastating best he can carve a defence open with a pass, or score a brilliant long-range strike and Victory fans will be hoping he can lead the team to glory.

Troisi's career highlight comes at international level, scoring the winning goal for the Socceroos in the 2015 Asian Cup final.

One disappointment is that he has never performed consistently overseas, both in Europe and Asia, despite having an opportunity at Serie A giant Juventus.

There is no doubt Victory will need a big season from Troisi if they are to challenge for silverware, with Sydney FC appearing to strengthen their squad once more.

Troisi scored six goals last season, down from 12 in his first season at Victory, and the club will be keen for him to push into double figures.

He is also still an integral part of the national team setup and will feature during the upcoming World Cup playoffs.
