Ghana will have, perhaps, their best chance of winning both men and women football competitions at the same African Games for the first time in 2023, having been handed the hosting rights.
Popularly known as the All-Africa Games, the quadrennial competition brings together all countries on the continent to battle for honours in various sporting disciplines.
The 2023 gathering will be the 13th edition.
Ghana beat Egypt to the hosting rights, which was announced on Thursday.
According to a press release by Ghana's Ministry of Youth and Sports on Friday, the championship "will be staged in Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast stadia" and "will serve as qualifiers for the various disciplines for the Olympic Games in Paris, in 2024".
It is worth noting that the qualifiers stated above do not include football as the Confederation of African Football (Caf) holds separate men and women qualifiers to determine the continent's representatives for the Olympic Games.
By the current rules of the event, Ghana's national senior female soccer team (the Black Queens) represent the nation in women's football at the championship, while the national male under-23 team (the Black Meteors) play in the men's football competition.
In 2011 in Maputo, Mozambique, the Black Meteors beat South Africa 4-2 on penalties to win their only men's football gold.
The Black Queens, on the other hand, are reigning champions of the competition's women football after beating Cameroon 1-0 in the final of the 2015 edition in Brazzaville, Congo, for their only gold medal.
Ghana could, however, clinch the double four years to hosting the event, with the next edition slated for Casablanca in Morocco next year.
