Ghana Special Competition Report: Wafa 3-2 Hearts of Oak: No revenge for Phobians

Wafa SC defeated visiting Hearts of Oak 3-2 in Matchday Six of the Special Competition Zone B in Sogakope on Sunday, with Haruna Jamal, Daniel Lomotey and Bortey Acquaye scoring for the home side while Fatawu Mohammed and Christopher Bonney found the back of the net for the Phobians.

Wafa were hoping for a repeat of another 'Easter Massacre', which was a 5-0 drubbing they handed Hearts on an Easter Sunday two years ago. Today’s meeting produced five goals as well, but they were split between both sides.

The hosts had a dream start when Jamal Haruna opened the scoring in the 12th minute after connecting a pass from Daniel Lomotey.

The Accra giants suffered domination for a while as Wafa pushed forth in a bid to improve their lead but the visitors were able to fight through counterattacks.

Abdul Manaf Umar, who was recently promoted to the senior team, bungled a chance to grab the equaliser for the Phobians when he failed to bend a close-range effort from a perfect cross by the 25th minute.

Wafa held on to their lead until the break but became the weaker side when the second stanza resumed. Hearts started to take matters into their own hands.

By the hour mark, captain Fatawu Mohammed, after cleverly beating goalkeeper Sabi Acquah, claimed the leveller for the visitors’ who had been controlling much of the game.

However, Wafa gradually recovered to reclaim the lead when Daniel Lomotey pounced on a long pass from centre-back Benjamin Agyare destined for Christopher Bonney, and finished his effort in the back of the net.

Bortey Acquaye made it 3-1 for the hosts by the 70th minute when he headed home from a corner kick after being left unmarked at the far post.

When it looked as if Wafa would walk away with a two-goal cushion, Hearts reduced the deficit through a late penalty converted by Christopher Bonney.

Wafa are now leaders of Zone B with 11 points while Hearts are on fourth position with nine points.
