Ghana FA not giving up on Sarfo

IK Sirius midfielder Kingsley Sarfo turned down a call-up to join the Black Stars ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia.

The 21-year-old was part of Kwesi Appiah’s 30-man squad released last month but did not report to camp over nationality issues.

However, Sweden U21 coach Hakan Erixson has confirmed that the former Anokye Stars player has confined in him that he will play for Sweden ahead of Ghana.

“I have talked to Kingsley himself after the call-up from Ghana and he wants to play for Sweden," Erixson told Expressen.se.

“That is why he didn’t answer the call up from Ghana for the games against Ethiopia in the qualifiers as well as Mexico and USA in friendly games.

“The Swedish Football Association started working on his nationality switch at the end of May and soon it will be completed for him to represent the nation," he added.

In spite of the revelations from Erixson, Ghana Football Association executive committee member Wilfred Kwaku Osei says they will continue to talk to Sarfo to rescind his decision.

“Ghana FA will not give up on Kingsley Sarfo even though we are hearing its about 80 per cent sure that he will be joining Sweden,” Osei told Nhyira FM.

“He is a good player with lots of potentials so we will continue to talk to him. I will tell him not to ever turn his back to Ghana. He is from Ghana not Sweden,” he added.

Goal understand that Sarfo is likely to join Sweden U21 squad for the Uefa U21 Championship to be hosted in Poland between June 16 - 30.
