Avril Phali has welcomed the signing of Brilliant Khuzwayo by his former club Orlando Pirates

The 28-year-old recently signed for the Buccaneers alongside eight others after his contract ran out at Naturena. Khuzwayo spent nearly six years at Pirates’ Soweto rivals where he was forced to contend for the No.1 with Itumeleng Khune. This saw the former AmaZulu shot stopper for most part play second fiddle and saw little game time which subsequently led to his departure from Amakhosi.

Nonetheless, Pirates were quick to pick up the goalkeeper as they looked to employ a reliable shot- stopper to take over the reins. Pirates currently have on their books, Wayne Sandilands, Jackson Mabokgwane and Siyabonga Mpontshane, but Phali, believes that having Khuzwayo at the club could allow coach Milutin Sredojevic to rotate his squad. This could prove useful especially when considered that Pirates are set for a hectic next 12 months due to their future commitments on the continent.

“Moving to Pirates was a good move for Khuzwayo,” Phali told Phakaaathi.

Khuzwayo’s introduction though could see at least one of Pirates’ goalkeepers leave the club in the off-season according to Phali.

“He can compete and get game time, I don’t know which goalkeeper is leaving at Pirates or if they will keep all of them. But it will help that he can get game time at Pirates because they rotate the keepers more,” he added.

Meanwhile, with Khuzwayo likely to gain some much-needed game time, Phali tips Khuzwayo to return to the Bafana Bafana fold.

“He could even make it into Bafana Bafana with the way he will play at Pirates, plus his age is good as well so he could make it,” he concluded.

Despite Phali welcoming the club’s latest acquisition, it remains to be seen whether or not he will be a regular starter at the Houghton-based outfit. In Khuzwayo’s final season at Chiefs he made just three league appearances accumulating just 270 minutes of PSL action.
