Olivier Giroud has been the star performer for Chelsea in the UEFA Europa League this season. The French striker is the joint top scorer of the competition with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic (10 goals).
Giroud, though not a starter in the Premier League, is the highest scoring Chelsea striker this season. His impressive performance in the Europa League also earned him a one-year contract extension recently. After Alvaro Morata started the season poorly, he was shipped out on loan and Chelsea brought in Gonzalo Higuain to bring the goals. However, Higuain hasn't impressed either.
Higuain has managed to score just five goals so far while Morata had scored seven. Compared to them, Giroud has already hit the double digits. He has scored 12 times so far this season, with 10 of them coming in the Europa League.
The French striker has always performed well in cup completions. He has delivered some stellar performances on the big stage while being at Arsenal. He has scored a staggering 22 goals in FA Cup, including the winning goal for Arsenal in 2015 final.
His numbers in Europe are also pretty impressive. He has netted 27 times in Europa League and Champions League. The Frenchman is also the only Chelsea player to score in doubles digits in a European competition.
Maurizio Sarri’s side will be banking on their key man Giroud’s goal scoring prowess as they gear up to take on city rivals Arsenal in the final of Europa League in Baku on Thursday.
