Didier Drogba’s Williamsville Athletic Club advance to Caf Champions League first round

Didier Drogba, a board member of Williamsville Athletic Club, will be delighted after the Ivorian top-flight outfit advanced to the first round of the Caf Champions League in their maiden appearance.

The two-time African Player of the Year who is also a part owner of United Soccer League side, Phoenix Rising was confirmed a major player in the club’s formation in December with responsibilities in developing the club and securing partnerships.

Williamsville edged Mali’s Stade Malien at the Stade Robert Champroux on Tuesday, to settle for a 2-1 aggregate scoreline after a 1-1 draw in Bamako on February 10.

Roland Zan Bi's stoppage-time effort sealed the victory for the Abidjan outfit.

The victory sets a decisive showdown between Williamsville Athletic Club and defending champions Wydad Casablanca of Morocco in March as the winner of the tie would progress to the group stages of Africa's premier competitons. 

The Ligue 1 outfit are placed fifth in the Ivorian top-flight standings with 19 points from 13 games this season.
