Desiree Ellis, Janine van Wyk and Thembi Kgatlana up for top Caf awards, Banyana nominated for Team of the Year

Banyana Banyana have been recognised for the stellar year they have had while four of their members have nominated for top Caf awards

Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has been nominated for the Women's Coach of the Year award by Caf.

Ellis' success since joining Banyana has been out of this world as she successfully defended the Cosafa Cup earlier this year. 

It is under her watch that Banyana qualified for their first ever Fifa World Cup finals which will be held in France next year. 

Banyana are also in the final of the ongoing Awcon tournament in Ghana where they will face Nigeria in the final. 

Ellis will be up against Zambia's Bruce Mwape, Joseph Brian Ndoko of Cameroon, Saloum Houssein of Mali as well as Super Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby. 

Meanwhile, Banyana Banyana captain Janine van Wyk has also been nominated for the Women's African Player of the Year award. 

The veteran defender had a fruitful year both for her former club Houston Dash and Banyana thus far.

She has been nominated alongside her teammate Thembi Kgatlana, who plays for Houston Dash in the US.

Furthermore, Banyana Banyana are among the five national teams nominated for the Women's Team of the Year award. 

South Africa's rise in 2018 coupled with their qualification to the Fifa World Cup finals for the first time in 25 years twisted Caf's hand to consider including them among the top five teams on the continent. 

Banyana are nominated alongside Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Mali.
