Concacaf reveals radical new tournament setup
Concacaf has confirmed major structural changes to the Gold Cup format ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 edition. The continental championship is officially moving away from its traditional layout of four groups of four.
Instead, the 16 participating nations will be divided into two larger groups of eight. Each team will play four group-stage matches against a variety of opponents, which will be determined by a specialised ranking system. The top four teams from each of the two groups will then advance to a standard single-elimination knockout stage.
Swiss model promises heavy heavyweight clashes
The new setup draws heavy inspiration from the 'Swiss Model' recently adopted by the UEFA Champions League. Concacaf designed the change to eliminate predictable, one-sided fixtures in the early stages.
Crucially, the revamp means regional giants like Mexico and the United States could clash much earlier in the competition. Concacaf president Victor Montagliani insists the new structure is exactly what supporters have been demanding.
"Our fans want to see the best teams in our region compete against each other, and this format will create more opportunities for those matchups to happen earlier in the competition," Montagliani explained.

Making every group stage fixture matter
Historically, the United States and Mexico have navigated the Gold Cup group stages with minimal resistance. This new ranking-based fixture list guarantees a significantly more competitive schedule for all 16 nations involved. Montagliani highlighted that the new format ensures high stakes across the board as nations fight to reach the final 16.
"At the same time, every match will matter, with teams facing a balanced mix of opponents and competing for a place in the knockout rounds," Montagliani added. "We believe this will make for a more competitive and exciting Gold Cup from the very first match through to the Final."
Saudi Arabia join the 2027 edition
The 2027 Gold Cup will officially kick off on June 17, with the showpiece final scheduled for July 11. While a host nation is yet to be confirmed, the United States has hosted or co-hosted every single edition of the modern tournament since 1991.
Fifteen teams will earn their spots through the 2026-27 Concacaf Nations League and the Gold Cup preliminary rounds. They will be joined by Saudi Arabia, who enter the prestigious competition as a special guest nation. Fans will discover the full fixture list when the draw takes place on April 8.
