Kevin De Bruyne is arguably one of the best playmakers in the world. Whether it is one of his surging runs with the ball at his feet, the inch-perfect low-crosses from out wide or the incredible weighted through-balls to the attackers, the Belgian is sure to leave his mark on a big game.

Unfortunately, an injury forced him out of most of Manchester City’s UEFA Champions League games last season. He featured in just four games, starting three of them. However, he shone in the most important game of City’s campaign – the second leg of the quarter-final against Tottenham.

De Bruyne registered a hat-trick of assists to provide his team what seemed an unassailable advantage. He set up Raheem Sterling twice with perfectly weighted passes in different circumstances. He threaded the needle’s eye with an accurate pass to set the Englishman up for his first goal.

Next, he delivered a perfect pass across the face of Spurs’ goal across a bunch of players from both teams. It was a simple finish for Sterling at the far post. De Bruyne’s third assists on the night involved a spectacular dribble across three players of the opposing players and a simple pass that Sergio Aguero finished comfortably.

This performance served as a perfect summary of what the 28-year-old is capable of. He displayed all the tricks in his hat but his team suffered a heartbreak at the end.

The City midfielder will look to stay injury-free, peak at the right time and take the competition by storm this season. However, his performances last season were enough to see him indicted into the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season.
