Caf Confederation Cup wrap: AS Nyuki prove be surprise package, while Junior Ngongang's four goals push New Star into next round

DR Congolese side Nyuki are having a fairytale run in the Caf Confederation Cup after beating Sudanese side Al Ahly Shendi 3-1 on penalties on Wednesday, to progress to the first round.

Omatondo Osomba struck seven minutes from half-time to help Nyuki to a 1-0 victory and cancel the 1-0 defeat they had suffered away in Sudan seven days earlier.

Although they are a newly-promoted side in the DR Congo top-tier, Nyuki have still punched well above their weight due to their transformation in a very short period of time.

They will now play Angolan giants Petro Atletico in the first round.

In securing their passage to the next stage, Petro Atletico beat Orapa United away in Botswana to complete an emphatic 6-0 aggregate victory.

Wednesday also saw another team from DR Congo, Daring Club Motema Pembe, progressing to the first round of the Confederation Cup following a 1-1 away draw with Anges de Fatima of the Central African Republic.

Ricky Tulengi was on target for Daring Club, while Landry Pelembi scored for the hosts as the Congolese side sailed through on a 5-2 aggregate scoreline after thumping Anges de Fatima 4-1 in the first leg at home.

Elsewhere, the most brilliant individual performance of the second leg was from New Star forward Junior Ngongang who scored four goals to help the Cameroonians thump Vital’O away in Bujumbura.

It was one of the biggest victories away from home performed by New Star.

But stealing the limelight was Ngongang whose four goals proved crucial after the first leg between the two sides in Douala ended goalless.

New Star will now meet Al Ahli Tripoli in the first round.

Meanwhile, Zambian side Green Buffaloes also confirmed their place in the first round after drawing 0-0 with Al Merreikh away in the South Sudanese capital of Juba.

The draw came after Green Buffaloes had won 2-0 at home in the reverse fixture, leaving coach Bilton Musonda a satisfied man after avoiding defeat on the road.

"I think we planned for this game, We said if we don't concede, then we are through to the next round,” Musonda was quoted as saying by Futaa.

“Our performance was good and we kept the ball most of the time. I think tactically we are improving each and every day. You need to be tactical when playing these games especially away where you even see biased refereeing.”

It was also a good day at the office for another Zambian side Green Eagles who beat Young Buffaloes of eSwatini 3-2 away to seal a 5-2 aggregate scoreline win.

After a 3-0 first half win, Eagles lost concentration to allow Young Buffaloes back in with two goals in the second half thanks to a Phiwa Dlamini brace.

Anos Tembo had scored a brace for Eagles while Spencer Sautu was also on target for the Zambian visitors.

For conceding two goals in the second half, Eagles coach Aggrey Chiyangi admitted that they have some aspects of their game to correct as they now prepare to face Algerian side Na Hussein Dey in the next round.

"We are going to work on our weaknesses to help us face NA Hussein Dey. Facing a team from North Africa we know how they play and we know what to work on,” Chiyangi said.
