Ajax Cape Town finish 15th and qualify for the PSL relegation play-offs

Ajax Cape Town have failed to escape from the Premier Soccer League (PSL) relegation play-offs as they lost 2-1 to Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at the Cape Town Stadium.

It was a hard to swallow defeat for the Urban Warriors who trailed 1-0 when Bernard Parker netted through a fine header in the 51st minute.

Muhsin Ertugral pushed his men to find an equaliser and skipper Mosa Lebusa found one for the hosts in the 64th minute to level the matters.

However, the hosts could not contain Amakhosi as Joseph Molangoane scored the winner in the 86th minute to send the Ikamva-based side to the play-offs.

Following their loss to Amakhosi, the Urban Warriors finished their 2017/18 PSL campaign with 31 points from 30 matches.

An uphill battle faces the Ikamva-based side as they will meet the two NFD sides in Jomo Cosmos and Black Leopards and will also await the outcome of the impending Tendai Ndoro case.

Moreover, Ajax chose to field Ndoro during the second round after the Zimbabwean despite the striker having already played for Orlando Pirates and  Al Faisaly in Saudi Arabia  – the move is against Fifa transfer rules due to a player only being to play for two clubs during a season.

The PSL and the South African Football Association (Safa) is set to announce a decision on Monday regarding the player’s eligibility, should the decision be against Ajax they could potentially be docked points.

Meanwhile, SuperSport United managed to escape the play-off spot after a hard fought win over Baroka FC in their final match of the season courtesy of a goal from the penalty spot by Aubrey Modiba.

Another PSL play-off spot candidate was Bernard Molekwa’s Polokwane City who fought hard to settle for a 1-1 draw against Chippa United at home.

The visiting Chilli Boys found the back of the net through Linda Mntambo in 42nd minute, but they showed resilience to score an equaliser through Thanduxolo Booi in the 42nd minute.
