Former Ghana Football Association executive committee member Randy Abbey has lauded the decision by Ghanaian clubs to withdraw from the 2018-19 Caf inter-club competitions in order to adequately prepare for subsequent seasons.
Last week, club owners held a meeting with the Normalisation Committee and reached an agreement that there will be no representation in the Caf Champions League and Caf Confederation Cup.
This came up as the country aims at repairing the damages caused after an investigative documentary in June led to the dissolution of Ghana FA and the suspension of all football-related activities.
Abbey, who is the owner and president of second-tier side Heart of Lions, believes the decision is a step in the right direction.
"It was a good decision that the clubs decided to stay away from the competitions," Abbey told Graphic Sports.
"Ghanaian teams have not performed well in Africa lately and may continue the same way if another set of clubs represent us.
“Besides, no Ghanaian club qualifies to be in Africa because the 2017-18 league season was not over before it got truncated. I believe what we should be doing is to help build proper structures for the various clubs so that we strengthen our league.
"Until then, I believe we are not ready for continental competitions so any attempt to participate will be disastrous for the country,” he added.
Asante Kotoko and Ashanti Gold, however, have insisted they were prepared to take the risk since they have 'quality players and good financial support.'
