Anzhi Makhachkala have completed the signing of Ghana and Evian Thonon Gaillard defender Jonathan Mensah on a two-and-half-year deal in an undisclosed fee.
Mensah, 25, had previously been strongly linked with a move to English side Swansea City after making only five appearances for the Ligue 1 side this season but opted for the Russian club with reports indicating that he was promised a starting role by Anzhi manager Ruslan Agalarov.
“Anzhi Makhachkala have signed Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah from Evian TG. The agreement with the 25-year-old defender of the national team of Ghana is a two and a half years,” a club statement read.
Goal understands that Mensah joined Anzhi for a cut price of €150,000, with a 20 per cent sell on fee going to Evian TG in the future when he is sold to any club. He will join his new teammates in Spain on Wednesday in their winter training camp.
Mensah has been capped 49 times with Ghana since making his debut in 2009, scoring one goal.
He was part of the Ghana squad that played in the 2010 and 2014 Fifa World Cup in South Africa and Brazil respectively.
He also won the 2009 World Youth Championship with Ghana.
