The Black Princesses got off to a poor start as they were well beaten by a determined USA side and now have an uphill battle ahead to become the first Ghanaian women’s side to make it out of the group stages of a Fifa tournament.
The Princesses were pecked back by an own goal from Linda Addai after a promising opening to the first half and had to rely on goalkeeper Patricia Mantey to keep the score at 1-0 by half time. The second half started well for the Ghanaians but they were brought back again as Maya Hayes scored a hat-trick to give the USA a resounding 4-0 win.
The Ghanaians started the game with some lovely possession as the experienced USA side struggled to settle with Dadson causing problems early on. The favourites did manage to settle down but still failed to penetrate until a good corner was headed onto the post by Morgan Brian, but it ricocheted off Addai into the net for the opener in the 20th minute. Patricia Mantey was then called upon to make a couple of saves from Morgan then Chioma Ubogagu but nearly lost out to the latter after rushing out too early. Ubogagu then failed to hit her shot on target with Mantey out of position to take the teams into the break with USA in the lead.
The second half started well again for the Ghanaians but they were sucker punched again as Ohai found Hayes with virtually USA’s first attack to double their lead in the 50th minute. The west Africans then had a good spell but only had a Dadson effort into the side netting to show for their efforts but were nearly caught again as Kristie Stengel curled one just past the post.
The Ghanaians came close to having a consolation with what was probably their best chance of the half, but Beatrice Sesu’s shot was blocked with Mercy Myles’ flick from the resulting corner going into the side netting.
Candice Osei Agyemang had time to place an effort on target though it hardly troubled the goalkeeper as the USA relentlessly tried to add more gloss to the scoreline and Hayes provided that with a lovely dink over an onrushing Mantey in time added on to put the USA in pole position to qualify from a very tough group made up of Germany and China.
