Renato Augusto has emerged as the favourite to replace injured Douglas Costa in the Brazil squad for August’s Rio Olympics.
Bayern Munich forward Costa was forced to withdraw from coach Rogerio Micale’s squad on Monday after the German champions confirmed he has still not recovered from the muscle injury which ruled him out of last month’s Copa America.
And local media are now reporting that the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) have already been in contact with China-based Renato Augusto to step in as one of the Selecao’s three overage players in Rio.
The Beijing Guoan midfielder will now be hoping his club sanction his release for the tournament.
Costa’s withdrawal arrived in a week that also saw Shakhtar Donetsk block the release of midfielder Fred.
And with Paris Saint-Germain intent on holding onto defender Marquinhos in August, Micale now appears to have lost three members of his original 18-man squad.
Fred is likely to be replaced by Gremio midfielder Walace, who made his international debut during June’s Copa America.
Brazil are hosting the Olympics for the first time in the country’s history.
The quest for gold in the football competition has become a national obsession as it remains the one title for which the Selecao are eligible that they are yet to win.
