Commentary

That's all for today, goodbye!
That's back-to-back losses for United in the Premier League, which sees them drop to seventh in the table as the pressure continues to mount on Solskjaer. Next up for them is a trip to Villarreal in the Champions League. Ranieri has his first home win as Watford manager, and he travels to his old side Leicester City for their next game.
Watford breeze past 10-man Manchester United to win 4-1. Femenia had an early goal chalked off after he'd encroached during Sarr's penalty save, with De Gea also keeping out the retake. The hosts were 2-0 up at half-time though thanks to King and Sarr. Van de Beek came off the bench to score just five minutes into the second half, but United couldn't capitalise on it. Maguire was sent off for two bookable offences before goals from Pedro and Dennis in stoppage-time rounded things off for Watford.
E. Dennis
Yellow Card
Watford
90' + 7' Dennis takes his shirt off in celebration and is booked for it.
90' + 7' FULL-TIME: WATFORD 4-1 MANCHESTER UNITED.
B. Foster
Assist
Watford
90' + 6' Foster got his head up on the edge of the box and spotted Hernandez backing into Dalot before playing a great ball up top to catch out United's defence.
E. Dennis
Goal
Watford
90' + 6' DENNIS SCORES! And just like that, it's 4-1! It's a simple long ball over the top from Foster, and it bounces over Matic's head. Dalot can't get close to Hernandez, who swipes at the air, but Dennis is behind him to finish it off, drilling a low shot across goal into the far bottom corner.
90' + 4' United are all over the place at the back as Watford look for another late goal. Dennis puts another good ball into the box, trying to pick out King, but Lindelof is there to cut this one out.
E. Dennis
Assist
Watford
90' + 2' Dennis had so much time before he eventually decided to thread it between United's defenders to pick out Pedro's run.
João Pedro
Goal
Watford
90' + 2' PEDRO SCORES! De Gea had just made a good save to keep out Pedro, but he can't stop this one. Dennis slides it through to Pedro on the right of the box and from a tight angle, he slots his effort through De Gea's legs at the near post to make it 3-1 Watford!
J. Lingard
J. Sancho
Manchester United
90' + 1' Final change for United now as Lingard comes on to replace Sancho for the five minutes of stoppage time.
90' The United defenders just sit back and let Pedro carry the ball towards the box, so he decides to have a go from range. He keeps his shot low but ends up dragging it wide of the far post.
89' Pedro slides a good throughball into King, but he can't find a way past Matic, who has done well since slotting into centre-back after Maguire's sending off. The forward eventually pushes him off it, only to see his cross blocked by Dalot.
87' Ronaldo cuts inside from the right, and he tries to pick out Martial on the left of the box. He's being given no space though and is nudged off it by Cathcart before he can hit the cross.
Diogo Dalot
L. Shaw
Manchester United
84' United are using a concussion sub now as Shaw is led straight off the pitch by the medical staff after taking that hit to the head. Dalot is on in his place.
83' Femenia got a lot of power behind his cross from the right and Shaw took the full brunt of it as he blocked it. He's gone down holding his head and is receiving treatment now.
81' It's patient play from Watford as they switch it from left to right to open up United. Femenia has a lot of space and swings in a good cross. Wan-Bissaka clears it at the far post, almost putting it in his own net in his attempt, but he gets it out for a corner.
79' CHANCE! United are throwing everything they have at Watford at the moment as Ronaldo pulls it back from the byline. It's just behind Van de Beek, but Fernandes is on the edge of the box. He has time to take a touch before he hits the shot, but he lifts it over the bar.
78' OFFSIDE! Martial pulls the ball back to Van de Beek in the box, but it's too far ahead of him. He can only touch it through to Ronaldo, who takes it around Troost-Ekong before poking it over the line. He was well offside though and it won't count.
João Pedro
I. Louza
Watford
77' Third change for Watford now, and it's Louza that's making way for Pedro.
76' RONALDO! Sancho does well to keep hold of the ball under pressure from King before he lifts a great cross into the middle for Ronaldo. He rises above Cathcart to head an effort across goal, but it sails just over the crossbar.
74' United are keeping the ball well at the moment, but they're struggling to get in behind Watford. They switch it from left to right, and Ronaldo tries to knock it around Sissoko into the box, only to be dispossessed by the midfielder.
72' CHANCE! United go straight up the other end, with Van de Beek sliding another good throughball into Ronaldo. He timed his run perfectly but hit the shot on the turn, and he sends it swerving into the side netting.
71' Watford are trying to take advantage of their extra man straight away here, with King pulling it back to Dennis on the edge of the box. He hits a low shot first time, but Matic steps across to block it.
69' MAGUIRE IS SENT OFF! He was taking too long to clear his lines and Cleverley was quick to close him down. As soon as he was put under pressure, Maguire went to ground, bringing the midfielder down in a clumsy challenge. After getting to his feet, Maguire knew his game was finished as he took the captain's armband off. It's an inevitable second yellow.
J. Hernández
I. Sarr
Watford
68' Sarr is being led down the tunnel by the medical team now, and Hernandez is on to replace him.
68' CLOSE! Matic's throughball to Sancho is cut out, but Van de Beek wins it back and squares it straight back to the Serbian. He tries to catch Foster out at his near post but drags his shot just wide.
67' Sarr is helped to the sidelines and he's moving very gingerly. He's struggling to put any weight on it at the moment, and even though it looks like he wants to carry on, Watford are going to have to make a change here.
66' Van de Beek tried to win the ball, and he crashed into Sarr after reaching it. It looks like the forward's ankle twisted during the challenge, and he's down receiving treatment on it now.
W. Troost-Ekong
N. N'Koulou
Watford
64' Nkoulou is just feeling his hamstring as he makes his way off the pitch, and Troost-Ekong is on to replace him.
H. Maguire
Yellow Card
Manchester United
62' Maguire has his arms around Sarr as he tries to stop the run. It's a clumsy challenge from him that sees his name taken by the referee.
61' Van de Beek's two Premier League goals have both come as a substitute, with this his first since netting on his debut against Crystal Palace in September 2020.
59' United are starting to find their rhythm now and are getting a lot of joy down their right side. Sancho threads it through to Wan-Bissaka, who tries to pull it back to Martial, but it's cut out by Nkoulou.
57' GREAT SAVE! Van de Beek turns and slides a great throughball into Ronaldo's feet, and he's one-on-one with Foster. He slips just as he hits the shot, but Foster is closing him down and gets enough on it to take it over the crossbar.
55' CHANCE! It's another good run from Sancho down the right, and he picks out Fernandes on the edge of the box. He's off-balance as he hits the shot though, and it curls just wide of the far post.
54' There are big shouts from the away fans for a penalty when Ronaldo goes to ground in the box after Masina pushed him in the back. The linesman's flag is up though, so nothing could be given.
52' Sancho's run is cut out down the right, and Watford break on the counter again. Dennis touches it into King on the halfway line and he carries it down the left and into the box. He can't get any power on his shot, but De Gea still gets across to make sure it goes wide.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Assist
Manchester United
50' It's unselfish from Ronaldo, who could easily have gone for goal, but instead, he chose to nod it down for Van de Beek.
D. van de Beek
Goal
Manchester United
50' VAN DE BEEK SCORES! It's well worked by United as Martial knocks it out to Sancho on the right, and he floats a great cross to Ronaldo at the far post. He cushions a header back across goal, and Van de Beek throws himself forward to nod it into the back of the net. He's been on the pitch less than five minutes, and he's made it 2-1!
48' Van de Beek cuts out King's cross on the edge of the box, but when United try to break again, it's broken up by Sissoko. He gets it back out to King on the left again, but Lindelof blocks this one.
46' Watford get us back under way for the second half!
A. Martial
M. Rashford
Manchester United
46' And Martial is also being brought on for Rashford.
D. van de Beek
S. McTominay
Manchester United
46' There's a double change at the break for United. Solskjaer is taking no risks with McTominay, who is on a booking, with Van de Beek replacing him.
The pressure continues to mount on Solskjaer, with another poor showing from his team at the back. They're going to need a big second half if they want to get anything out of this game. As for Watford, they were brilliant and caused United all sorts of problems from the first whistle, so Ranieri will want more of the same.
Watford take a 2-0 lead over United into half-time. The hosts had the chance to take an early lead from the spot after King was fouled by McTominay, but Sarr's effort was saved by De Gea before Femenia fired in the rebound. The goal was disallowed as he'd encroached and when the penalty was retaken, De Gea saved again. King did put them ahead with a close-range finish before Sarr drilled in a second just before the break. At the other end, Foster kept out Rashford's volley with a good save.
45' + 4' HALF-TIME: WATFORD 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED.
45' + 2' Ronaldo can't find a way past Cathcart, but United quickly manage to win the ball back this time. Maguire goes long, trying to pick out Rashford on the right, but he set off too early, and the offside flag goes up.
I. Louza
Yellow Card
Watford
45' Louza had his arms around Fernandes before he tripped him up and he's shown a yellow card for the challenge.
Kiko Femenía
Assist
Watford
44' Femenia linked up well with Cleverley down the right before Sancho's attempt at an interception bounced back to him, and he pulled a good cross back for Sarr.
I. Sarr
Goal
Watford
44' SARR SCORES! United create their own problems again by not clearing their lines, Femenia gets lucky as the ball deflects into his path. He pulls it back for Sarr, who has time to take a touch before drilling a low shot across goal, past De Gea and into the far side of the net. 2-0 Watford!
42' Only against Everton (eight) has King scored more Premier League goals than he has against United (five).
40' SAVE! Dennis can't find a way past Lindelof, so touches it out to Femenia on the left instead. He whips a brilliant cross into the middle, which is flicked on by King, but it's straight at De Gea, who punches it away.
38' Watford are getting a lot of joy down their left, and Femenia plays a great throughball behind Lindelof for Dennis. He's in on goal, but Maguire slides in with a perfectly timed tackle to stop him from getting a shot away.
36' It's another poor corner into the box for United, and the clearance goes straight to Dennis, who surges forward down the left. He's got Sarr and King tracking back with him, but Wan-Bissaka makes an important block to stop his cross from getting through.
34' Matic gives the ball away this time and Sarr goes straight on the attack. McTominay can't get too close at the risk of getting another booking, and Sarr takes it to the left before curling in a cross that is blocked by Lindelof.
32' GOOD SAVE! It's a good spell of possession this for United, and Fernandes floats a wonderful ball over to Rashford on the edge of the box. He hits the shot first time on the volley and it bounces in front of Foster, who dives to get a strong hand to keep it out.
30' United are still trying to play out from the back, but they look shaky as Watford continue to close them down high upfield. No matter what they try, they can't get out at the moment.
E. Dennis
Assist
Watford
28' Dennis let the ball drop before knocking it past Wan-Bissaka and pulling a good cross back to King on the edge of the six-yard box.
J. King
Goal
Watford
28' KING SCORES! Wan-Bissaka's clearance is a poor one as he glances it back as far as Dennis on the right of the box. He takes it to the byline before pulling it back for King and he sidefoots his shot past De Gea and into the back of the net. 1-0 Watford!
27' Again, United are caught out at the back by Watford, with Dennis nicking the ball off Lindelof. He squares it into King through the middle, but Matic is back to make another important interception for the visitors.
25' It's a lovely ball over the top from Shaw to Fernandes, and he cushions it down for Rashford on the left. He initially does well, knocking it through Femenia's legs to get away, before he's stopped by Cathcart.
23' BLOCK! Sarr's low cross is put out for Maguire by a corner, and the resulting ball into the box is a good one. King gets it at the far post and his first touch takes him away from Wan-Bissaka. He keeps his shot low, but Maguire is there to block it.
21' Watford are causing United all sorts of problems with their high press here and the visitors are struggling to get out of their own half. They get some respite here though as Shaw is brought down by Sarr.
S. McTominay
Yellow Card
Manchester United
19' McTominay slid in to try and dispossess Dennis and completely misses the ball, so he's shown the first yellow card of the game.
18' Sancho's clearance is cut out by Mesina deep in United's half and he manages to touch it into King. He has time to cut inside from the left before curling a shot towards goal, but Matic is there to block it.
17' De Gea has now saved the last two penalties he's faced in the Premier League, as many as he'd saved from his previous 31 faced in the competition.
15' Sarr crashes into Shaw, but Rashford keeps the move alive for United down the left. He tries to curl an early cross into the box, but it's blocked by Femenia and Fernandes completely misses it when it bounces to him on the edge of the box.
13' BLOCK! Rashford drives forward through the middle on the counter for United and slides in Ronaldo down the left. He cuts into the box and goes for goal despite the tight angle, but Cathcart gets enough on it to put it behind for a corner.
12' Watford put a corner into the box and it's chaos in the middle as everyone scrambles to try and get on the end of it. Sissoko takes a swing at it on the far side, but Wan-BIssaka was in the right place to block it and set United on the counter.
David de Gea
Penalty Save
Manchester United
11' It's more good goalkeeping from De Gea, who guessed the right way again and got his arm up to deny Sarr yet again.
I. Sarr
Penalty Miss
Watford
11' DE GEA SAVES AGAIN! Sarr steps up to take the penalty again and this time, he gets a lot more power behind the shot. He goes the same way as before, but De Gea does as well and gets a strong hand behind it to keep him out for the second time.
9' NO GOAL! And the penalty will be retaken! After looking at the replays, VAR spotted that Femenia was encroaching before Sarr struck the penalty, but so were the United defenders, so the referee points to the spot again.
8' FEMENIA SCORES! The defender was quick to react after De Gea parried the effort and he hits the shot first time from the right of the box. He fires the shot over the keeper, who was quick to get back to his feet, but he can't keep it out. VAR is just having a look at this though...
6' PENALTY TO WATFORD! Fernandes swipes at a clearance and it loops up into the box. King watches it all the way and McTominay trips as he tracks back, falling straight into the forward. Sarr drills a low effort wide and once the referee sees the ball has gone out of play, he points to the spot.
4' Lindelof switches it out to the left, with Shaw touching it into Matic first time. He drives through the middle, pushing past two Watford midfielders before trying to pick out Sancho's run, but he hits it straight to Foster.
2' United almost play themselves into trouble early on as Wan-Bissaka's throughball down the right is cut out by Dennis. He tries to play it into King, but Lindelof steps in to cut it out.
1' Fernandes gets the game under way for United!
The teams are out on the pitch, with kick-off just moments away!
