Commentary

That's all from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium today, so thank you for joining us and goodbye!
When they reconvene after the international break, Spurs will visit Newcastle in search of back-to-back wins, while Villa must wait for a fortnight before meeting Wolves in a Midlands derby.
A tangible sense of relief reverberates around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Spurs end their Premier League drought with a hard-fought win over a disappointing Aston Villa side. The hosts could not be faulted for effort and clarity of purpose, even if it was an often scrappy affair, and Son's contribution was the key to unlocking Villa's back three on several occasions - they now climb above the West Midlands outfit in the table.
90' + 5' FULL-TIME: TOTTENHAM 2-1 ASTON VILLA
90' + 4' Spurs amusingly kick for touch with a free-kick from the right, which surely ends any Villa hopes today.
90' + 3' Villa can't get out of their own defensive third, as Spurs are fully committed to securing the points and press them frantically.
90' + 1' In the second stoppage-time minute of five indicated by the officials, Tottenham take a short corner, which involves Son going on a bizarre run into and back out of the area, where he ultimately earns a free-kick. That will soak up some valuable time.
Bryan Gil
Lucas Moura
89' After a typically industrious display, Lucas is replaced by Gil, who gets just another brief cameo in a Spurs shirt.
C. Archer
D. Ings
89' A frustrated Ings comes off for Villa, with Archer appearing for the last few minutes.
87' Now Kane is guilty of not sealing the deal, after the ball reaches him on the left side of Villa's box and his effort is dealt with by Martinez low down.
86' Spurs are not making this easy on themselves! Lo Celso spurns a great chance to score when played in by a combination from Son and Kane. At the last second, Mings hurls himself in the way and blocks the shot.
84' A presentable Spurs chance goes begging as Emerson finds himself in plenty of space high up on the right flank, only to slightly overcook his low cross, which evades Kane, who was standing ready for a tap-in.
82' Lo Celso has been lively since his introduction, and swings an attempt from the edge of the area wide of Martinez's right-hand post after receiving a pass from Son deep into the final third.
Bertrand Traoré
K. Hause
80' Smith is switching shape in pursuit of an equaliser, as Hause is withdrawn from the Villa defence and Traore is brought on to bolster the attack.
79' Kane has a right-footed attempt from just outside the box, but his shot misses to the left of the Villa goal. Another escape for the visitors.
77' Out of nothing, Ings shows his predatory instincts in the box, by swivelling to fire a shot at the Spurs goal from near the penalty spot. However, it is well within Lloris' wingspan and the home goalkeeper saves quite comfortably.
G. Lo Celso
T. Ndombèlé
76' Ndombele's contribution is warmly applauded by most of the stadium, as he comes off to be replaced by Lo Celso.
73' Villa just miss out on an opportunity to strike back, as when Ings tries a through ball, his strike partner Watkins is caught offside.
M. Targett
Own Goal
71' SPURS GO BACK IN FRONT! Lucas makes a late run ahead of Targett at the back post and has an empty net to tap into from just yards out, following a fine Son run and cross. As the ball struck Villa's luckless left-back, though, it has been awarded as an own goal. Villa weren't level for long: Spurs lead 2-1!
E. Buendía
J. Ramsey
69' Ramsey is replaced in the Villa midfield by Buendia, who has 20 minutes or so to make the difference.
C. Romero
Yellow Card
68' Romero finds himself booked for protesting about a supposed infringement in the build-up to Villa's equaliser.
M. Targett
Assist
67' A perfectly weighted cross from the left side of the area by Targett allows Watkins to poke home the equaliser.
O. Watkins
Goal
67' VILLA ARE LEVEL! Watkins demonstrates his renowned predatory instincts, as he slides in ahead of Lloris to connect with a low Targett cross from the left and prod the ball into the net. Ings was instrumental in the build-up. The Villans are back on equal terms at 1-1!
65' Unlucky! Ramsey receives the ball 10 yards out and quickly gets off a low shot, only to find it blocked by the unsuspecting Ings in front of goal. That all came about from another long throw by Cash.
63' After much ball-drying preparation, Cash hurls a long throw into the area, causing some panicky head-tennis to ensue. When the ball breaks to Ramsey, his effort is blocked behind for a Villa corner.
61' Once more, Villa's ex-Arsenal goalkeeper is required to intervene, as he dives at the feet of Ndombele inside the area to divert the ball to safety. The visitors are on the ropes here!
60' GREAT STOP! Martinez is called upon again, as he spreads his giant frame to smother Son's close-range strike from the left side of the area. Spurs have a corner.
58' From an advanced position on the right, Cash works a yard of space, but his right-footed attempt is scuffed harmlessly wide of the Spurs goal.
57' Villa escape punishment for some sloppy defensive work, as Spurs are off target again, with Martinez scrambling down to his left as the ball zips past his post.
55' Lucas and Ndombele combine well to set up a Spurs counter attack, but when the ball breaks to Son 25 yards out in the centre, he skies his effort well over Martinez's crossbar.
53' There is a great sense of openess about the opening throes of the second half, as either side seek what could be a decisive goal in deciding the trajectory of this game.
51' Building from the back, Reguilon finds Ndombele high up on the left flank, but just when it looks like the Frenchman is free to shoot, Hause cuts across him and shuts the door.
49' Rain thunders down onto the pitch, as Villa press for an equaliser; switching the ball at pace from side to side and probing without making significant headway.
47' GREAT BLOCK! Romero prostrates himself in front of Targett, who finds himself free on the left side of the Spurs area and fires his shot straight into the former Juventus defender. Villa again fail to produce any threat from the resultant corner.
46' We are back under way at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium!
Villa striker Ings - short of clear opportunities today - has scored six goals in his last six appearances against Tottenham in all competitions, so will hope to maintain that form by netting during the second half. However, the former Southampton man has been on the losing side versus Spurs in his last three meetings with the North London outfit, and will be equally keen to avoid adding a fourth game to that streak.
Though hardly a masterclass of control and precision, Tottenham have worked hard for their lead, with confidence naturally growing after they went one goal up against an industrious Villa side. Having endured a frustrating start to the season, Kane and Son have been involved on several occasions, with the latter showing great clarity of thought to lay on Spurs' opening strike. The visitors have lacked care with their final ball and must sharpen up in the final third if they are to turn things around after the interval.
45' + 1' HALF-TIME: TOTTENHAM 1-0 ASTON VILLA
45' On the counter, Lucas sprints into a dangerous position for Spurs, but Konsa times his tackle expertly and the chance is snuffed out.
44' Villa are getting back into the game, as twice they are denied by blocks deep inside the Spurs area. The home side are hanging on for half-time at the moment.
42' GREAT EFFORT! A trademark McGinn volley from the edge of the box just misses the right-hand post, after Targett's cross found Watkins. Once the ball broke to McGinn, he thundered it past the outstretched hand of Lloris.
40' Both men involved in the clash are back on their feet, allowing Luiz to take a Villa corner from the left, but it is once more cut out at the near post.
38' A clash between Emerson and Targett in the Spurs area sees both men down on the turf and receiving attention from the medics.
O. Skipp
Yellow Card
36' Skipp is booked for a foul on Ings high up on the right wing, a clear yellow card for the young midfielder.
34' Spurs' Hojbjerg wins a free-kick in his own half after a foul by the visitors' Hause.
33' An inswinging Luiz corner causes concern for the Spurs defence, but some shirt-pulling sees the referee blow up for a foul and the home side regain possession.
31' From well outside the area, Kane's right-footed free-kick attempt is saved comfortably by Martinez in the bottom right corner.
J. Ramsey
Yellow Card
30' Ramsey is booked for his crude tackle on Kane, which gives Spurs a free-kick 10 yards outside the area in a central position.
29' Reguilon starts a swift counter attack for Spurs, finding Kane in a dangerous area in front of the Villa area, but he is brought crashing to earth by Ramsey and the move is brought to an end.
Son Heung-Min
Assist
27' Son took advantage of some passive Villa defending to surge to the edge of the box and play Hojbjerg in to score the opening goal.
P. Højbjerg
Goal
27' SPURS LEAD! Having been gifted the ball on the halfway line, Spurs run directly at the static visiting back three, and Son lays the ball on for Hojbjerg to calmly slot into the bottom-right corner of the net. An excellent finish, which makes it Spurs 1-0 Villa!
25' Kane concedes a free-kick for a foul on Konsa in the Villa half, but the visitors are unable to make anything of the opportunity.
22' GOOD SAVE! Kane uses his physical presence to work some space midway into the Villa half and tests Martinez with a long-range attempt, which the Argentinian goalkeeper just tips over.
19' Cutting in from the left, Son embarks on a mazy run into the Villa area, but Konsa clears well under pressure just inside the area.
16' A cross from Reguillon finds Kane in a good position at the back post, and the England striker nods it down invitingly, but there are no team-mates available to take up the chance to strike.
14' Skipp gets the timing of his challenge all wrong and concedes a free-kick for fouling McGinn in the visitors' half.
13' They have struggled to penetrate their opponents so far today, and Tottenham have had fewer shots (56) than any other Premier League side this season - with Kane failing to score in any of his last five league appearances.
11' Ramsey and Emerson fly into a sliding challenge for the loose ball, with the former coming off worse. Despite the roars of the crowd, though, the referee decides only a free-kick to Spurs should be awarded.
9' Both sides have been careless in possession so far, with the ball zipping about at a tremendous pace, but to little effect. Villa's harrying has certainly unsettled their hosts.
7' Son has been down receiving medical attention after a challenge from McGinn, but is ultimately fit to continue.
5' Tottenham have won 10 of their last 12 Premier League games against Villa, while today's visitors are seeking to win consecutive league games against Spurs for the first time since 2008. The Villans last won consecutive away games against the London side back in 1995.
3' Watkins wins a free-kick, as Villa attempt to put Spurs on the back foot with some assertive play. However, the visitors fail to make anything of the opportunity.
1' We are under way at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium!
The players are out on the pitch in North London, with kick-off just moments away!
Top of the Premier League pile after three matches of the 2021-22 campaign, Spurs have slipped to 12th in the table ahead of kick-off, though they managed to post a morale-boosting 5-1 win over Mura in the Europa Conference League on Thursday evening. By contrast, seven points from the last 12 available has seen Dean Smith's Villa side rise into the top half of the table, with their victory at the Theatre of Dreams ending a streak of three previous defeats away from home.
Spurs remain without Steven Bergwijn and Ryan Sessegnon today, but Nuno has otherwise had a full hand from which to choose; opting for a midfield three of Hojbjerg, Skipp and Ndombele, with Alli left on the bench. Meanwhile, Tuanzebe is available for Villa after being ineligible to face his parent club last week, but has lost out to Old Trafford matchwinner Hause in the battle for a place in the visitors' back three; however winger Leon Bailey is not ready to return and misses out entirely.
