Simba SC have moved to second position in the Tanzania Mainland League after defeating their hosts Mbeya City by a solitary goal on Sunday.
Captain John Bocco scored the only goal in the first half to ensure his team reduced the gap at the top to eight points.
The reigning champions came into the match knowing three points will send them closer to their bitter rivals Yanga SC who are currently on an unbeaten run.
The visitors came into the match as clear favourites owing to their good record against Mbeya. In 14 previous seasons, Wekundu wa Msimbazi had managed to get nine wins, three draws and two losses.
It was the 21-time champions who had started the game on a high trying to go for an early goal that would motivate them and destabilize their hosts.
Meddie Kagere was fouled in the danger zone after 23 minutes but the referee was not interested.
Simba had to wait until the 32nd minute to get an opening goal. 2019/20 Tanzania Mainland League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Clatous Chama managed to pick out captain John Bocco in the box.
The towering striker held off his marker before firing on the roof of the net to give the champions the deserved opener.
Despite creating several chances in the second half, Wekundu wa Msimbazi failed to get another goal.
Mbeya City thought they have scored in the 73rd minute after beating goalkeeper Aishi Manula, but Kenya international Joash Onyango was there to ensure the ball did not cross the line.
The result pushed the Sven Vandenbroeck-led side to second position with 29 points, eight less than leaders Young Africans (Yanga SC) who have played two games more.
It was the seventh loss for Mbeya who remained in 16th position with just 12 points from 15 games played. They have won two games, drawn and conceded 16 goals, scoring six in the process.
In another league game played on Sunday, JKT Tanzania defeated their hosts Biashara Mara United 2-0 to move to 15th position on the table.
After Sunday's defeat, Biashara are eighth with 20 points.
Coastal Union and Tanzania Prisons played to a goalless draw.
