Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Liverpool open their Premier League campaign next Friday against newly-promoted Norwich City at Anfield, while City begin away at West Ham United on Saturday.
Manchester City kick off the campaign by winning the Community Shield on penalties, defeating Liverpool 5-4 at Wembley Stadium. It was not a great performance from Pep Guardiola's men especially in the second half when they were at the mercy of the Reds' finishing in front of goal. Raheem Sterling had put them ahead in the first half, and he missed a couple of good opportunities to extend their advantage. Joel Matip got Liverpool back into the game, heading home from close range. Jurgen Klopp's men were denied several times late on by Claudio Bravo and a brilliant acrobatic clearance from Kyle Walker to deny Mohamed Salah. As a result, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout. Georginio Wijnaldum was the unfortunate man to miss his effort, while Gabriel Jesus held his nerve to secure the victory for City.
FULL-TIME: LIVERPOOL 1-1 MANCHESTER CITY (Manchester City win 5-4 on penalties)
Gabriel Jesus
Penalty Goal
Manchester City
CITY WIN! Jesus takes a staggered run-up and it does enough to prevent a full-length dive from Alisson. The Brazilian finds the corner to win the shootout. 4-5.
Mohamed Salah
Penalty Goal
Salah has to score to keep Liverpool in the game. He curls his effort beyond the reach of Bravo into the corner. 4-4.
O. Zinchenko
Penalty Goal
Manchester City
Zinchenko looks a tad nervous as he steps up. Alisson goes the right way, but the effort of the left-back has enough power to burst through the keeper's hands. 3-4.
A. Oxlade-Chamberlain
Penalty Goal
Oxlade-Chamberlain takes a fine penalty, blasting his effort high into the top corner. 3-3.
P. Foden
Penalty Goal
Manchester City
Foden takes on the responsibility and displays his composure by curling a left-footed strike into the net, sending Alisson the wrong way. 2-3.
A. Lallana
Penalty Goal
Bravo does his best to upset Lallana's rhythm, but the Liverpool man buries his effort low into the bottom corner. 2-2.
Bernardo Silva
Penalty Goal
Manchester City
Bernardo Silva dispatches his effort with power into the corner, handing City the lead. 1-2.
G. Wijnaldum
Penalty Miss
SAVED! Wijnaldum takes a poor penalty, which is at a comfortable pace and height for Bravo, who makes the stop by diving to his right. 1-1
İ. Gündoğan
Penalty Goal
Manchester City
Gundogan holds his nerve, curling his effort into the corner. 1-1.
X. Shaqiri
Penalty Goal
Shaqiri fires home the first penalty from the spot, blasting his effort into the bottom corner. 1-0.
Liverpool will be first up from the spot. Here comes Shaqiri...
Despite Liverpool's late pressing they cannot find a winner. Joel Matip's header cancelled out Raheem Sterling's first-half effort, meaning that the contest will be decided from the penalty spot.
90' + 4' SAVE! Bravo denies Shaqiri late in the game. Liverpool work an opening in the box as Salah tees up the Swiss for a strike. He goes low towards the bottom corner from the right inside channel, but the City keeper makes the save.
90' + 3' WHAT A CLEARANCE! Walker saves the game for City with an acrobatic clearance off the line to deny Salah. The Egyptian capitalises on a mistake from Otamendi to race through on goal, although Bravo saves his first strike. The rebound falls back to Salah and he nods the ball over the keeper towards the net. It seems destined to cross the line, but at the last second Walker sprints back and clears the ball over his own bar.
90' + 2' BLOCK! Sterling runs at the Liverpool defence with menace, but Robertson does well enough to block his strike from a tight angle before Van Dijk clears the danger.
90' There will be four minutes of added time.
P. Foden
K. De Bruyne
Manchester City
89' De Bruyne is cramping up and now makes way for Foden.
89' Salah has taken eight of Liverpool's 14 shots today.
88' SAVE! Rodri loses out to Oxlade-Chamberlain at the back and it allows Salah another sight at goal, but Bravo is decisive and races off his line to block the shot from the Egyptian.
86' OVER! Salah runs at the City defence and pulls the trigger on an early strike from distance. It hits Zinchenko and loops towards goal. Bravo is concerned, but it lands on the roof of the net. Liverpool still have a corner.
85' De Bruyne makes a run down the left flank and he fires a low cross into the middle, but Matip is well placed to clear the danger.
82' SAVE! Shaqiri, Lallana and Keita all combine to almost put Liverpool ahead. Shaqiri releases Lallana into the right inside channel and he cuts the ball back for Keita to strike. The midfielder connects with his effort, but it's too much in the centre of the goal and allows Bravo to make the save.
81' Three of Matip's four goals for Liverpool have been scored in London (Selhurst Park, London Stadium, Wembley), with three of the four also coming from headers.
A. Oxlade-Chamberlain
D. Origi
79' Oxlade-Chamberlain has 11 minutes to impress as he works his way back from injury, replacing Origi.
A. Lallana
J. Henderson
79' Lallana comes on for Henderson.
X. Shaqiri
Roberto Firmino
79' Shaqiri replaces Firmino for the Reds in the final third.
V. van Dijk
77' Van Dijk collects the ball from Henderson's free-kick before picking out Matip with a fine cross back into the middle, allowing his team-mate to head home.
J. Matip
77' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!! MATIP EQUALISES!!! 1-1!! Liverpool are back in the game as Matip heads home from close range. It all comes from a free-kick from the right flank from Henderson. His delivery goes through the crowd of players, but Van Dijk gathers in the left inside channel. The Dutchman guides the ball back into the middle where Matip rises to guide his header past Bravo into the net. Game on.
75' Zinchenko makes an important intervention at the back to stop Keita breaking through and releasing Salah in space on the right. He had to win the ball with his challenge and he did brilliantly.
73' Sterling and De Bruyne combine down the left flank to allow the Belgian to shoot at goal. His effort creeps through a crowd of players, but Alisson gets down to make the save.
72' Salah collects down the right flank once again, but on this occasion he's halted by a fine sliding challenge from Otamendi.
70' Liverpool have had 71% of possession so far in the second half - they had 42% in the first half.
69' SAVE! Salah weaves his way in and out of tackles down the right flank before he cuts inside to fire at goal. He goes for the bottom corner, but Bravo is equal to his strike to make a solid stop.
J. Matip
T. Alexander-Arnold
67' Alexander-Arnold makes way for Matip, which could see Gomez move out to right-back.
N. Keïta
67' Keita replaces Fabinho for Liverpool in the middle of the park.
63' Origi originally lost possession to Walker in the challenge that allowed the Sterling attack. He stayed down, but has been cleared to continue this afternoon.
63' That could have been the moment for City to take complete control of the game. It's not the first time Sterling has failed to capitalise on an opening this afternoon.
61' CHANCE! Sterling is played through on goal by Walker following a good run and pass from the full-back. All he has to do is beat Alisson, but he dwells too long on his decision as Walker tries to race forward in support. Sterling fails to connect with a strike, allowing the Liverpool keeper to make the save.
İ. Gündoğan
David Silva
Manchester City
61' Gundogan replaces David Silva for City in their midfield.
59' There's a VAR check against Alexander-Arnold for charging into Bernardo Silva and then flicking out at the Portuguese. However, the officials deem that it was not worthy of punishment.
58' OFF THE POST! Salah strikes the woodwork. The forward turns the City defence inside and out before striking a low effort towards the bottom corner. However, the ball comes off the post and bounces out before ZInchenko sends it behind for another corner.
57' OFF THE LINE! Van Dijk latches on to Alexander-Arnold's delivery from the left flank, guiding an effort towards the top corner. The ball strikes the underside of the bar and bounces down on the line before heading out and away. A huge slice of luck for City.
56' Origi sends a pass down the left flank for Firmino, but Stones and Otamendi converge to force the ball out for a corner.
55' Liverpool are trying to establish a rhythm to their play, but they're finding it difficult to play through the City defensive line.
53' Salah tries to run at the City defence in the left inside channel, but he loses out to Otamendi in the box, who produces a strong challenge.
51' It has been a frenetic start to the half from both sides. Liverpool need to force the issue to get back into the contest.
49' OFFSIDE! Sterling hits the post, although he was offside after latching on to a throughball from David Silva. The former Liverpool man has been a thorn in the side of his old club this afternoon.
48' Liverpool flood men forward and Firmino takes possession. He offloads towards Robertson, who finds Origi on the edge of the box. The Belgian goes for the strike, but his effort is deflected into the hands of Bravo.
47' OVER! Sterling wins possession from Alexander-Arnold and surges down the left flank. His cross finds Jesus in the middle, who lays a pass to David Silva. The Spaniard strikes a first-time effort at goal, but he sends it over the bar.
46' We're back underway at Wembley Stadium.
Although Pep Guardiola's men are ahead, the Spaniard does have one concern. Leroy Sane was forced from the pitch before the City goal due to an apparent leg injury. Sane has been linked with a move away from the club, but after starting the match it appears as though he is in the plans of Guardiola this term. Those ideas may have been scuppered depending on the severity of the problem.
Manchester City hold a 1-0 lead over Liverpool at the break in the Community Shield courtesy of Raheem Sterling's 12th-minute strike. Both sides have had chances in front of goal, but City have been the more clinical. The Reds switched off at the back and allowed Sterling to pounce, guiding a low strike beneath Alisson. Mohamed Salah at the other end has had three good openings, but his radar has been uncharacteristically off this afternoon. However, there has been enough promise from Liverpool in the final third to suggest that this contest is far from over.
45' + 3' Bernardo Silva again causes problems down the right flank. He releases the run of De Bruyne, but the Belgian just cannot keep the ball in play on the byline.
45' + 2' Bernardo Silva charges down the right flank and he lifts a cross into the middle. Jesus rises unmarked, but the ball is just too high for him to reach.
45' There will be three minutes of added time.
45' Henderson has to be alert at the back twice in the space of a minute. First he heads a dangerous De Bruyne cross out for a corner before clearing the lines from the set-piece after Alisson dropped the cross.
44' Alexander-Arnold floats the delivery from the resulting set-piece to the back post. Origi heads the ball back across the middle, but Bravo makes a comfortable claim.
43' Bernardo Silva gives away a free-kick right next to the corner flag after charging into Origi.
42' Guardiola has paid the price for his protest to the fourth official as he has been shown a yellow card by referee Martin Atkinson.
41' Gomez and David Silva collide in a 50/50 challenge in the middle of the park. The Spaniard comes off worse and Guardiola is not happy on the touchline, suggesting that there was malice in the tackle.
40' Stones threads the ball through to De Bruyne in space, but the Belgian is just flagged offside. The Belgian has been active in the first half.
39' Liverpool win a corner down the left flank, but Alexander-Arnold overhits his delivery straight out for a goal-kick. The Reds are lacking a cutting edge in and around the box.
36' The early tempo of the game has subsided into a passive affair. It will please Guardiola more than Klopp, although the Spaniard will not be overly thrilled with how many openings the Reds have had in the first half.
34' Salah plays a cross-field pass to find Origi in acres of space, only for the Belgian to miss the ball completely, conceding a throw-in in the process.
K. De Bruyne
Yellow Card
Manchester City
33' De Bruyne brings down Origi on the charge and goes into the book.
31' Wijnaldum tries to play the ball forward through the middle, but Firmino working back towards his team-mate is flagged offside.
29' OVER! Origi does well down the left flank to play a cross into the box. Stones and Zinchenko both fail to clear with headers, allowing Salah to pounce. He goes for the strike on the up, but can only send his effort over the bar.
28' De Bruyne breaks the offside trap down the right flank and he has support in the middle, but Robertson gets back just in time to make the block.
26' City are trying to slow the pace of the game down to take the vigour out of Liverpool's pressing game. Guardiola is agitated with his players on the sideline despite their lead.
24' Salah breaks with speed down the right flank and he works the ball to the left for Robertson. The left-back tries to weave his way through the City defence and offload back to Salah, but his pass goes through to Bravo.
23' The early stages of the game have been open to say the least. City have the lead, but Liverpool have had excellent chances.
21' Salah twists and turns his way through the City defence and looks to find Wijnaldum on the charge, but he just misplaces his pass, allowing Bravo to gather the loose ball.
19' Sterling has now either scored (six) or assisted (one) seven goals in his last four games for club and country at Wembley.
17' SAVE! City work their way through the Liverpool defence again. Robertson stops De Bruyne firing at goal, but Sterling takes on the strike. The England man gets power behind his effort, but Alisson makes the stop.
15' SAVE! Salah finds space down the right flank and he gets the better of Zinchenko to bear down on goal. He strikes towards the near post Otamendi and Bravo combine to make the block.
14' Bernardo Silva offloads down the right flank towards the run of De Bruyne. The Belgian tries to fire a low ball across the face of goal, but Alisson comes off his line to make the claim.
Gabriel Jesus
L. Sané
Manchester City
13' Sane is replaced by Jesus in the final third.
David Silva
Manchester City
12' David Silva latches on to Zinchenko's knockdown and flicks the ball to Sterling to score.
R. Sterling
Manchester City
12' GOALLLLLLLLL!!!! STERLING PUTS CITY AHEAD!!! 1-0!!! The reigning Premier League champions strike first as Sterling converts from close range. Liverpool are caught out by a free-kick worked to the right flank. Walker floats a cross to the back post for De Bruyne to head on. David Silva sticks out a boot to flick it towards Sterling, who guides an effort down and it travels under Alisson to find the back of the net. First blood to City.
11' Sane has been forced to leave the field and it's unlikely that he will be able to return.
9' A moment of concern for Guardiola as Sane goes down on the deck under Alexander-Arnold's challenge. City have the free-kick, but the German appears to be in pain.
8' WIDE! Chances continue to flow in the early stages. Salah misses the best of the lot as he places his left-footed strike wide of the post after being teed up by Firmino in the right inside channel.
6' SAVE! Origi floats a hopeful ball forward towards Firmino. The Brazilian takes it out of the air acrobatically before turning to fire on his left foot on the half-volley. He gets his effort on targe, but Bravo makes the stop and gathers at the second attempt.
4' CHANCE! Gomez is robbed of possession by Sterling, who then releases Sane down the left inside channel. The German goes for a strike from a tight angle, but can only hammer his effort into the side-netting.
2' Liverpool put pressure on Stones in the shadow of his own goal, but the England defender holds his composure to play out from the back.
1' We're underway at Wembley.
The players are out on the pitch so we should be underway shortly.
In all competitions, Man City have won just two of their last 12 meetings with Liverpool (D3 L7), though one of those draws was in the 2016 League Cup final which they then won on penalties.
Guardiola opts to start with Bravo between the sticks as Ederson is forced to settle for a place on the bench. Stones and Otamendi get the nod to start through the middle of the defence, while Zinchenko begins the season at left-back. New signing Rodri slots straight into the heart of the midfield alongside De Bruyne and David Silva. Sterling leads the line with Jesus and Aguero in reserve.
Liverpool are without Sadio Mane this afternoon due to his late return from the Africa Cup of Nations. Origi gets the nod to start in his place alongside Salah and Firmino in the final third. Gomez slots into the back four, ousting Matip, who has to settle for a place on the bench.

City claimed the Premier League crown, EFL Cup and the FA Cup last season, although the Champions League still eluded the club. Pep Guardiola will be hard pressed to enjoy a stronger campaign domestically, but the league will once again be his priority. Liverpool were very worthy foes and the Spaniard will be looking to make a statement in their first match-up of the campaign to re-affirm City's status as the top club in the country.
Both teams will be looking to set down a marker for the new Premier League campaign. Liverpool were beaten to the crown by City in one of the closest title races in league history, with both sides amassing over 90 points each. No side had ever claimed more points without winning the title than Liverpool did last season. That will be on the mind of Jurgen Klopp as the new domestic season is about to begin even if the Reds did win the Champions League last term.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Community Shield match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.
