Kakamega Homeboyz emerged 1-0 winners over Sofapaka in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League encounter at Bukhungu Stadium on Sunday.

Stephen Opoku scored the goal that separated the rivals and ensured the home side moved to eighth place after 16 Premier League matches.

Kakamega Homeboyz took a seventh-minute lead through Opoku to stun the visitors who were, however, looking a stabilised side by the time they conceded.

Ken Odhiambo had to make a change in the 24th minute when Nixon Omondi got injured and his place was taken up by Alex Imbusia. Nicholas Muyoti was also forced to make a change at the half-hour mark when Kakamega Homeboyz's Chris Masinza was injured. Selemani Hamisi was brought on to cover the place of his teammate who suffered what appeared as a minor cut just above the eye.

In the 44th-minute, Sofapaka came close to getting an equaliser when Isaac Mitima rose to head a cross delivered by Titus Achesa but his effort flew out slightly.

Muyoti withdrew Allan Wanga as the second half began and threw former Western Stima striker Villa Oramchan into action. Other changes were made at the hour mark as Benjamin Oketch came in for Brian Shikanda whereas the goal scorer Opoku was replaced by Stephen Wakhanya.

Kepha Aswani and David King'atua were also introduced for Bizimna Hamisi and Sebastine Sunday respectively as the second half picked speed.

In the 70th minute, Lawrence Juma, who is in good form, almost grabbed an equaliser but Kakamega Hoemboyz's goalkeeper Geoffrey Oputi did well to deny him with a fingertip save.

Kakamega Homeboyz's custodian Oputi was injured in the 74th minute when he attempted to clear a free-kick by Sofapaka but after a few minutes of medication, he proceeded with the day's duties.

Another Sofapaka chance went off target when Alex Imbusia received a cross from Achesa only for him to head wide from a good position in the 78th minute. Imbusia was denied by Oputi in the 89th minute when he was the busier goalkeeper in the last minutes of the tie.

Despite relentless efforts by Batoto ba Mungu in the last 10 minutes, Kakamega Homeboyz stood their ground and eventually picked the win at home.
