Athletic can now look forward to Friday's semi-final draw, which also contains Granada, Real Sociedad and Segundo Division side Mirandes. A bad week for Barcelona gets even worse, and they now have three days to pick themselves up before heading to Real Betis in their next LaLiga outing.
Barcelona have been knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Athletic Bilbao at the quarter-final stage! Williams, who had a first-half goal ruled out for offside, made the breakthrough for Athletic against the run of play with an impressive deft header three minutes into added time. Barca had been building pressure throughout the second half and wasted two big chances, with Griezmann and Messi both being denied by the legs of Simon.

GOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLL!!!!! ATHLETIC BILBAO 1-0 BARCELONA!!!! WILLIAMS SURELY WINS IT FOR ATHLETIC!! Gomez works the ball onto his left and sends an inswinging cross towards the edge of the six-yard box, where Williams is waiting to guide a deft header away from Ter Stegen and into the far corner of the net. Great header!

Four minutes have been added on at San Mames. Messi races forward but runs into a brick wall on the edge of the box.
WIDE! Williams ghosts in unmarked at the back post but steers a volley wide of the target. There is still time for one of these sides to snatch the victory.
Garcia is off and Gomez on in his place as Garitano turns to his bench for the third time today.
MESSI DENIED!! A huge, huge chance for Messi goes begging! He is played clean through by Arthur and even has the chance to take a touch to set himself, but his low shot is kept out by the legs of Simon.
Barcelona are desperate to get Messi on the ball. He takes it past one man and plays it to Griezmann, who in turn picks out Alba. The cross is blocked and Athletic survive another scary moment.
A number of tackles are made and in the end the ball runs loose for Aduriz, who is pulled back. Athletic have a free-kick and they will probably take their time over it, knowing the momentum is with Barcelona.
Barcelona hit Athletic on the counter but Messi is not able to squeeze the ball through for Griezmann. The attack continues and the visitors win a corner, which comes to little. It looks as though this one is destined to finish goalless.
Arthur sticks out an arm to hold off Aduriz. He catches his opponent in the face and is cautioned.
OVER! The ball is flicked into the path of Williams, who takes on the shot early in an attempt to catch out Ter Stegen. It is well off target, though.
Umtiti, who had to travel to San Mames independently today, replaces the injured Pique in a like-for-like change.
Pique has been carrying an injury and it looks as though his game is up. The centre-back goes to ground and the Barcelona physios are on.
Aduriz scored a late winner when these sides met here earlier this season. The veteran striker is on for Muniain.
It may be goalless but this is a gripping cup tie. Barcelona are looking more threatening now than at any other point in the game. Pique may have to be replaced, though, as he is limping around at the moment.
Looking back at that earlier chance for Griezmann, the substitute striker should have been burying the ball past Simon. Will Barcelona create another clear-cut chance like that before the 90 minutes are up?
Williams is about to burst clear of Pique so the Barcelona captain has little choice but to reach out and pull his opponent down to the ground. He is rightly booked.
BIG SAVE!! This is by far the best chance either side has created so far. Roberto powers down the right and squares it to Griezmann near the penalty spot, but his low shot is well saved by Simon. Barca are seriously knocking on the door now!
SHOT! A rare sight of goal for Williams as he picks up the ball in a pocket of space and fires away from 10 yards. Pique jumps in the way of the shot and it goes behind for a corner.
Arthur replaces Rakitic for the final 20 minutes of normal time.
Alba controls Messi's cross-field pass and attempts to pick out a team-mate in the middle, but Simon reads the danger well and collects. Barcelona have injected some pace into their game.
San Jose comes on for the booked Vesga with 24 minutes to go.
PENALTY SHOUT! Alba feeds the ball to Griezmann, who plays in De Jong with a first-time pass. Capa barges right into the Barcelona midfielder inside the box but the referee feels it was shoulder-to-shoulder.
Garcia puts his arms around Messi to stop his opponent's run and is the latest player to enter the referee's book.
Despite chasing a goal, Barcelona have not had a shot of any note in the second half - up until now, that is. The ball bounces on the edge of the box and Griezmann volleys high over the crossbar.
Athletic cannot clear the ball and it bounces around in the box, before eventually being booted down the field.
Barcelona are starting to turn the screw. Semedo creates some space down the right but his cross is cut out at the near post. Can Athletic see out this spell of pressure?
Setien has seen enough - Griezmann is on for Fati with just under an hour played.
F. de Jong
De Jong is shown a yellow card for simulation.
CHANCE! Messi plays a sublime ball through for De Jong. Simon races off his line and De Jong throws himself to the ground, but very little - if any - contact was made.
Vesga fouls Messi but play is allowed to continue. Alba tries to pick out Fati in the middle but is flagged for offside. The referee reaches into his pocket to show Vesga a yellow.
Athletic goalkeeper thumps the ball down the pitch when put under pressure by Messi. Ter Stegen races out of his box and beats Williams to it, but he takes out Pique in the process. The Barcelona skipper is soon back to his feet.
Athletic play around the Barca press and work it to Williams down the left. He holds onto the ball for a little too long and the attack eventually fizzles out.
There is zero penetration from Barcelona. They have picked up from where they left off in the first half by knocking the ball around without doing a great deal with it. Fati is taken out by a couple of players and wins a free-kick.
RESTART! Barcelona get us back under way at San Mames! Neither coach made any changes at the interval.
Setien was yellow carded in the first half, as were three of his players, with Barcelona growing more frustrated as the first half went on. Griezmann rescued them against Ibiza in the last 32 and is an option to come off the bench today, while Aduriz - on target the last time these sides met - is among Athletic's subs.
Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona go into half-time level at 0-0. It has been a first half of minimal chances, with Fati slicing wide and having a goal-bound shot blocked by Nunez in the best of Barca's opportunities. Athletic had the ball in the net through Williams, only for the offside flag to go up.

HALF-TIME: ATHLETIC BILBAO 0-0 BARCELONA
Messi's free-kick hits the wall. Barcelona's struggles continue as we enter the final 60 seconds of the first half.
Alvarez is cautioned for his challenge on Messi. There could be further punishment if Messi converts the free-kick.
Messi goes past one, past two and then a third player. Alvarez sticks out a leg and sends the Barcelona forward crashing to the floor on the edge of the area.
Barcelona have won all their three games in all competitions this season without Antoine Griezmann, who is among their subs today.
It appears as though Barcelona boss Setien has also been cautioned. The visitors are visibly frustrated having failed to create much of anything in the first half.
Alba is the latest Barcelona player to be cautioned, seemingly for dissent.
A frustrated Messi catches Garcia from behind and joins Semedo in the referee's book.
A long throw into the Barcelona box bounces off Pique without the defender knowing a great deal about it. For all of the visitors' possession, Athletic look just as bright when they get on the ball.
Barcelona have found their passing groove again. Unfortunately for Setien, his side are not really creating any chances as we fast approach half-time at San Mames.
SAVE! Garcia gets on the end of this latest cross into the box but his header is far too central to beat Ter Stegen, who makes a routine save.
Nunez is angry at himself for failing to bring the ball under control in the opposition box. Athletic have a corner but Barcelona deal with it. The home team are asking all of the questions now.
WHAT IS TER STEGEN THINKING? In an attempt to play the ball out from the back, Ter Stegen casually passes it straight to Garcia. The Athletic midfielder elects to shoot early and is wayward from the edge of the box - he could have carried it further.
Alba lunges in on Capa and gets little of the ball. The referee awards Athletic a free-kick, which Muniain swings into the six-yard box - a delightful delivery, but nobody can get on the end of it.
Pass, pass, pass, pass, pass from Barcelona, but it ultimately comes to nothing as Roberto gifts possession to the hosts. From the next attack, Messi's clipped pass runs straight out of play for a goal-kick.
Athletic are repelling every Barcelona attack. It is pretty relentless from the visitors, though, and surely only a matter of time until they find a way through. Messi is dropping deeper and deeper to collect the ball.
This has been a good spell on the ball for Barcelona. They are patiently probing away in search of the killer final ball. Fati turns on the edge of the box but the chance to shoot does not present itself.
Messi is unable to find a way through and then misplaces a pass in the direction of Rakitic as another Barcelona attack comes to an early end. Athletic's defenders are standing firm so far.
Barcelona have had 62 per cent of possession but there has been little between the sides over the past five minutes. In fact, Athletic have started to see more of the ball in the final third of the field over that period.
Lenglet takes no risks as he helps a long ball over the line for an Athletic throw. Busquets goes in hard on Muniain and the hosts have a free-kick in a promising position.
Messi is determined to make an impact today. He goes on another slaloming run but is dispossessed and then fouls Nunez when attempting to win back the ball.
A flowing Barca move comes to a disappointing conclusion as Fati and then Messi have shots blocked inside the box. Athletic have been penned in over the past couple of minutes.
It has been a lively start to the game at San Mames. Athletic have had the ball in the net, albeit with Williams converting from an offside position, and Barcelona have also had a couple of decent opportunities.
GOAL DISALLOWED! Martinez flicks on a corner and Williams slides in to convert at the back post. However, his celebrations are cut short by the offside flag. Replays show that is the correct decision.
VITAL BLOCK! Semedo pulls the ball back for Fati, who turns his opponent and gets a shot away. Nunez is positioned right in front of goal and prevents what would have been a certain opener. De Jong's header is then easily gathered by Simon.
Semedo catches Muniain and is shown the first yellow card of the match.
CHANCE! Messi goes on one of his trademark runs and plays in Fati to his left. The young forward takes a touch to set himself and then slices wide from a good position when put under a little pressure.
The ball is flicked on and Capa carries it into the box. Alba gets across and blocks the path of his opponent - legally, in the view of the referee. Fati counters and is barged off the ball.
Garcia plays an early ball over the top of Barca's defence for Williams to chase down. There is too much pace on it and Ter Stegen collects.
KICK-OFF! Athletic Bilbao, who beat Barcelona 1-0 here when the sides last met on the opening day of the LaLiga campaign, get this Copa del Rey quarter-final tie up and running!
The teams are coming out onto the pitch at San Mames, with kick-off just moments away.
Barcelona have won the Copa del Rey a record 30 times, including four seasons in a row prior to a 2-1 loss to Valencia in last year's final. Athletic Bilbao are the second most successful side in the competition's history, prevailing a total of 23 times, though not since 1984.
Gaizka Garitano has made three changes to Athletic's starting line-up from the home defeat to Getafe last weekend. Nunez, Vesga and Capa return to the side in place of Villalibre, Lekue and Unai Lopez, with the home side seemingly opting for a three-man defence today.
Barcelona show one change from their 2-1 league win over Levante four days ago, with Roberto coming in for the benched Griezmann. Fati scored both goals for Barca last time out and retains his spot alongside Messi, who has made plenty of headlines in the build-up to this game.

BARCELONA XI (4-3-3): Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Nelson Semedo, Gerard Pique (c), Clement Lenglet, Jordi Alba; Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong; Sergi Roberto, Lionel Messi, Ansu Fati.

Quique Setien's side have relinquished control of top spot in LaLiga to Real Madrid in recent weeks and, in the wake of public comments made by undisputed star man Lionel Messi this week, all is not well at Camp Nou. Athletic are 15 points worse off in the Spanish top flight and lost 2-0 at home to Getafe last weekend, but they will be looking to turn a bad week for Barca into a terrible one.
Barcelona survived a big scare against minnows Ibiza in the last 32, requiring a couple of late goals from Antoine Griezmann, before cruising to a 5-0 win over Leganes last time out in this competition. Athletic have already come through four rounds to make it this far, meanwhile, following up routine wins over Intercity and Sestao River with penalty shoot-out victories against Elche and Tenerife.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Copa del Rey quarter-final tie between Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona at San Mames.
